  1. But what about the 1200 Sportster Sport?
    That's quite sporty...

I could accept that as a definition... and to be honest it's probably a
more up to date definition than the traditional one I quoted... now that
people are starting to call bikes I'd classify as sports tourers (sprint
ST, Ducati ST series) as tourers. [1]

That's considered a seperate model by harley... so lets slot it in
between the standard sportster and the ZZR1200... and put down the extra
'sport' as descriptive, and relating to the rest of the harley range ok :)

Nope, deliberate intentional failure of comprehension, read it again, I
said "the technology of the day" and even gave you an example (the HD
Skirtster "may have arguably been a sports bike in the 50's" but the
barely changed model released in 2005 hardly is.
Which is excluded by the fact that I deliberately and carefully
specified ROAD bike (which before you say it, doesn't mean a bike that
can be ridden on a road, it's a bike whice is *optimised* for use on
bitumen roads, as opposed to being setup for versatility of surfaces
(trail) or specifically setup for off road use (motoX etc)
Yes. That's what everyone is saying is the definition of sports tourer.
I did say that sports tourer fell in between the two extremes.

Same as you go from extremely focused off road machine intended to be
used on the worst surfaces (trials) to hard core motoX to softer ones
with lights to trail bikes to the crossover thingys which have as much
road DNA as dirt. There's extreme points either end and hybridisation in bet
Oh no-one will believe me so I wouldn't worry, I'm the guy who did
several thousand Km days on the TRX which is undoubtably on the sports
    end for rider ergonomics.

    Seems funny that, doesn't it

Models that are clearly classified and designated by the manufacturers by
the "ST", and people are calling them tourers..............

what do they think it stands for? Shitty tourers?

  14. Well, in some cases, yeah, that _does_ happen.

The ZZR600 was Kawasaki's 600 class "sportsbike", until the ZX6R came
out, but they didn't stop selling the ZZR, they just sold that same old
"sportsbike" as an alternative to the ZX6R, arguably a "more touring
    oriented" alternative.

More recently Honda are doing the same thing with the CBR600F4i selling
alongside the "more sporty" CBR600RR - the F4i was their contender in
the 600 supersports class a few years back, but thats not what its
selling as in the dealerships these days.

I think you'll find people are even considering the ZX9R, the bike that
relegated the ZZR11 to "sports tourer" status, to have had the same done
to it by the new ZX10R - the ZX9R is arguably now considered a "sports
    tourer".

Its really common - people these days don't consider the ThunderAce to
be an openclass sportsbike, the R1 knocked it off that perch in '98.
Suzuki is the only one of the big 4 Japanese manufactures where I can't
think of an example off the top of my head (though no doubt someone will
now chime in with an obvious one) - their GSXR's seem to have gone from
"sportsbikes" to "hooligan bikes" instead of tourers, and their tourers
(like the Bandit) never really started life as sportsbikes.

I'm glad to see we're in violent agreement ! You're just rewording what
I said, IMHO, 3 more examples exactly the same as the skirtster.
Although a ZX9R was arguably bordeline as a sports bike on release (when
was that, 95 ?), have a look at every review that compared it to a blade
then an R1, it was always denounced as "soft", if the same bike was
released in 05, it would not even be considered as a sports bike (too
    heavy, too soft)

  19. When did it become soft?

Was it released as a "road" bike or a track bike?
