  1. What? You stuck Mad-Pikers head in your running behind?

Ordinarily I would not think so. However combine it with your earlier comment of "Sounds like you need a tune up, sonny." which was
directed directly at me, and it would appear that your comments on lack of up-keep and maintenance are being squared at myself.
My god you're right! Quick! Call the U.N. and stop them from wasting time chasing WMD's. The real problem is people that don't
    maintain their motorbikes!

Let's see you use "tourer" as an adverb in a moderately well constructed
    sentence.

I know... but can you offer a simple one measurment test alternative to it?
    It's not mine :)
Your own arguments aren't good enough for you now???

Who are these other people supporting your argument? Please come out of
the woodwork and let yourselves be known!
Most people do... but why are you ignoring these fair representations?
It's not so much about difficulty as it is about catagories... the
difficulty is a result not a cause.

Lets get back to basics here... if it's got 4 wheels and an internal
combustion engine and carries 4 or 5 passengers it's most likely a
car... if it's got 2 wheels and an internal combustion engine and
carries 2 passengers and has a shaft drive, luggage and a decent fuel
    range it's a tourer.

It's as simple as that :)
You don't have to follow it, you just have to accept that you are in the
minority and that most people will disagree with your opinion *grin*
Well if I said it then it'd be hersay...

    Which two?
We aren't talking about your opinion, we are talking about your
'argument' that collection of statements which 'supports' your opinion
    as expressed by you.
It could also be that you are rebelling merely for the sake of being
different! Personally I keep my rebelling for areas that are of
    community significance *grin*
    Mock away then LOL [1]

Hammo, having read this thread, I'm confused, what is your point ? Is it
there is no such thing as a sports bike, sports/tourer, or tourer. Or is
that tourer is a pejorative term (your original comment).

If it's the latter, then you need to show some sort of basis for the
opinion otherwise it will (rightly, IMNSHO) be ridiculed.

If it's the former then are you claiming that the arbitary collection of
motorcycle attributes that are classified into the various genus
(correct word ?) are incorrect or don't exist ?

I'd suggest the attributes that put a bike as "sports" road bike would be:
    - a motor tuned for the maximum HP output achievable with the technology
of the day (hence a HD Sportster may have arguably* been a sports bike
in the 50s but hardly is now)
    - a chassis and suspension setup to maximise speed/performance without
compromise for rider comfort - to the best of the technology of the day
    - layout and configuration intended to maximise performance without
ergonomic compromises to assist rider comfort
    - chassis setup to allow the fastest possible turn in to corners within
the limits of technology of the day with the intent
    - design intended to minimise weight as far as practical

I'd suggest that attributes that classify a bike as a "tourer" road bike
    would be:

    - ergonomics oriented towards rider comfort
    - chassis setup oriented to slow turn in exchange for mid corner
    stability on rougher roads
    - suspension setup for rougher/poorer road surfaces and rider comfort
-layout/configuration/ergonomics oriented to minimise rider effort and
hence make it easier to ride the bike further
    - chassis setup to easily accept luggage without damage to the bike.

A sports tourer would be a halfway house in between these two extremes
    of design intent.

I really can't understand whats controversial about that.

The interesting thing is that, IMNSHO, modern sports bike are far more
useful for touring than many sports/tourers and even tourers of yesteryear.

    JL
*from my limited knowledge of the era I would question that oft repeated
assertion but thats a different discussion

  19. So that every year when the new models come out, the previous are now sports
tourers? I.e 1997 sports bike, now sports tourer, or even tourer?
That sounds like a trail bike, XL250 et al.
    Isn't it a continuum?
    Shhh..........
