So it can't be used simply to describe a style of bike? It *must* have a positive or negative connotation?
That is of course assuming that people using the terms "sports", "sports-tourer" and "tourer" place the sports bike as being the
ultimate and everything else is beneath it.

What about the people that hold the "tourer" in a higher regard? Or the people that view both ends of the bike market with equal
    respect?

It appears the main problem you have is that *you* see the term "tourer" as denigrating a class of bike. You see it as such,
therefore that's how everyone else *must* view it when making those references.
    Bully for you. :)

250 to low fuel light will do for injected bikes that don't have
    reserve... :) [1]

    G-S

[1] Otherwise one has to stop to often for fuel...

My point exactly! But are you sure set logic will set well with Hammo?

    It might unsettle him....

Yes but that is _your_ belief... that doesn't prove anything in and of
itself. Making things fit into arbitrary catagories will of course
leave some bikes that don't fit neatly into them, but tourer is a fairly
    neat and easy catagory.

Shaft drive, comfy seat, panniers, good fuel range, protective fairing.

You might perhaps argue that that VTR1000F is a sports tourer (with some
reasonable arguments that I can already think of rather than a sports
bike)... but I'm sorry Hammo... no matter how much you whine about it...
    it simply _isn't_ a tourer :)
    And I did 750kms in a day on my RGV250... and that isn't a tourer either :)

Nothing... because it _is_ a tourer :)

Because sports tourers have less touring features (and touring ability)
than tourers but have more sports bike features (and more sporting
    ability) than tourers.

Neither of which denigrates either class, it simply describes them
I never said that, Dale never said that. We said they are less able at
touring, not that they cannot do it.

Touring isn't a sub class... check the catagories that the motorcycle
magazines use for bikes. Sports/Touring is probably one though...
    They exist also...

    A communter rider isn't a style of bike it's a type of rider... a
commuter bike is what you mean (and that's a style of bike not the same
as sports, sports/tourer or tourer either :)

I know how people I hang around use it... they use it to mean people
    'unfitter' than them.

If you want a definition how about "someone who'd fail the BMI index
requirement for a private pilots licence" (which I don't but not by a
    lot). *grin*

Idiot: A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below
three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or
guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification
system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

    *tut* *tut*

Not like you to be offensive just coz you are loosing a debate ;)

The simplist way to find the 10 sportiest bikes is to find the 10
fastest stock bikes around a race track. At some point you say well
that ones not within cooee of the others... "it's not sporty".

Works for bike magazines the world over...
