Sub 30,000 kms, less than 2 years old with extended warranty for under
$20k... and thats without trying hard.

You could do worse hiro... [1]

The figures I saw from the US showed the prius was better than the
civic, but different test conditions may have caused that.

I don't find performance cars 'exciting' and I've driven a few... they
just don't give me that adrenalin rush YMMV.
Small 2 seaters sell how many in oz though? What would you think of a
falcodore with a 2.5 litre intercooled turbo diesel? How about that
trend starts with the Ford Territory and then moves into the Ford Taxi
market, then moves into the Ford company car fleet... and then Holden is
forced to follow. (Seriously... looks like that is happening).
I've never been one not to compare cars (or bikes) of different types...
there are too many artificial divides these days.

People will say things like "testing a $30k civic against a $18k daewoo
is sensible because they are both 4 cylinder sedans", but I'd argue that
the $30k civic should be tested against other $30k cars, and the daewoo
against other $18k cars. If you take the $ bracket approach it makes
sense to compare different types. And after all... most people do have
a price bracket and don't stray that far outside it.
Now that's an interesting twisting of my words. My position is closer
to "turbo diesels are a better interim choice of car than the hybrids"
and that "purchasing a hybrid rather than a turbo diesel as an eco
choice or $ saving choice (at this point in time) makes little sense (to
    me)".

I wouldn't argue that hybrids won't help manufacturers develop electric
car technology, I just don't see that as _any_ reason to purchase one now!

I would rather sit back, ignore the hybrids... and buy the best current
    alternative.

Or... you could ignore the whole eco/fuel saving thing and buy a V8 ;-)

the smart car actually has quite a large luggage space, this is why is only
    has 2 seats
plenty enough for shopping or heading away for a weekend
i dont do very small trips (less than 5 k thats when you have your scoot)
the trips are a reasonable distance and if it was a commute then its 30 kays
    each way
for some its further so the savings are way above $2 a month
although its no super quick the performance is adequate and lets face it
    when you
are commuting the traffic doesnt move real fast anyway

base it against a hyundai or most small cars and its using about 4l/100 less

Having spent 35 years working and living in the city, I am now living 55 kms
and 50 minutes away. Anybody who really wants decent coffee buys themselves
a proper plumbed-in esspresso machine. Only costs you around $3500.

Being a distinctly non-InnerWesty, the list for me is "who would do
without decent bikeshops, decent bookshops, and broadband?"

Of course the bookshops in Sydney cost an arm and a leg even for second
hand (except Goulds which is not much chop really), the bikeshops are
second rate and the wreckers ditto, broadband is getting more available.

So the question really is "Who would want to live with all that traffic,
all that noise and the decent riding country over an hour away and
    cop-infested?"

    Zebee
    - who reckons Adelaide still has it all: good food and wine (what's
this coffee rubbish?), good music if you know where to find it, several
top class bookshops, not much traffic on good roads, and the best riding
on the mainland within 10 minutes of your door.

Errm yeah, you live in a country town, the number of people earning
enough PAYE to make salary packaging viable would be a very small
percentage (the one's on good money will mostly be working for themselves)
Yebbut $10 says they're included in the company car numbers.
    Kewl, so they've gone from selling 5 a year to 15 - woohoo !! :)
'Tis true ! Golfs only sell to girls and poofs ! Except the Gti which
goes like the clappers and hence is bought by people who don't want the
social stigma of driving a WRX.

*I've never really got into the cordura /dri rider style bike gear, I'm
sure it's much more practical than leather, but I've just never really
liked it much, feels all bulky and wrong.

Yeah fair enough logic, I think most people go shopping with a price
bracket in mind. I'll still buy the best handling, most powerful, nicest
looking car in my price range (in that order). Fuel economy won't be a
    consideration :)
You've sold me ! Now if only I could afford a new blown V8 Jag :)

The g/f's '01 Magna is worth about 12K, and that's the fully loaded
specc'd model (errm Verandah, Sundeck or sumthin' like that), cost
triple that new. You'd easy get a 3-4 yr model for 10K. Like I say, a
bargain if you're going to hang onto it a coupla years, really crap if
you want to hold it for 12months and sell again...

Actually... I reckon the outskirts of Perth is just about the right mix
of city features close by and country to suit me... pity the rest of OZ
is so far away (although, that actually has some advantages too).
Atmosphere? In a coffee bar? First go to the 300 odd cloned ones until
you find the one that's good... then enjoy the atmosphere :)
