My grandfather had a 180D mercedes benz, my uncle had a 300D mercedes
benz (my father was silly and bought a 280E).

Those weren't common, but they were going 10 years after the holdens
work bought at the time had died :)
You mean you don't already own one? What do you wear to poetry recitals?

You might notice that the Civic doesn't get the economy of the Prius
either... but yes I reckon you've pretty much hit the nail on the head
there. They are selling to 'image seekers' *shrug*.
Wouldn't sell as well though... coz It would have to sell on it's merits.
Yup... this is true... even if JL doesn't believe so (and no... I can't
really be bothered googling for figures to support that). I've seen
figures in the past and that's good enough for me ;-)
    Heh... fair enough.

Well, for me I can't think of a scenario where a 2 seater with no
luggage space would be better with 4 wheels, I'd go the scoot it has
more luggage space than the smart car as far as I can see, but then
practicality has never impinged on my vehicle purchases to date so I'm
not qualified to discuss the subject !
As a car, or do you mean the diesel engine ? If you want a car for doing
very short trips then sure it has advantages, but diesel vs petrol in
this vehicle ? Well, for the $2 a month you'd save I'd take the one that
can get to traffic speed quicker so you don't get wiped out.
Absolutely, and for no other reasons than tax, whereas here diesel is
dearer which for most people cancels out any discernible advantage.

Well, having spent 20 years in the country, and almost 20 years in the
city, I can't understand why anyone would willingly choose to be without
access to arts, pubs, music, cafes (decent coffee),ummm civilisation
    really...

Bloody hell mate, you're the one who tried to claim I was talking crap
when I said words to the effect of "if you compare apples with apples, a
turbo diesel and a turbo petrol of the same capacity, the turbo petrol
will put out more HP and slightly worse economy". Remember that bit ?
The other side of the coin being, if you get two turbos (diesel/petrol)
of the same HP output (obviously the petrol will be smaller capacity to
bring it down to the same output) then the petrol will be more economical...

Sure, but be careful of TCO, it works against you, remember 80% of
Australia's population do stuff all K's (less than 5K, km) you have to
make an awfully big fuel saving in that small a distance to cover it off.

Besides, if you're going to try and argue the pop'n of Australia are
sensible, I'm just going to have to throw my hands in the air in
    despair, they patently aren't !!

Mate, it's still tax advantaged to declare the personal miles (ie 99% of
'em) and pay the FBT, you still come out ahead - your petrol and running
costs are tax deductible - I effectively pay 50c a litre for my fuel,
like I care what the fuel economy of the car is.
That's different, they're govt dept's with fully govt owned vehicles,
salary packaged vehicle is different to a pool car that is shared
between people to get their job done, or a work allocated vehicle that
is intended to be used only for work purposes
RACV URL ? I'm not going to argue that medium 4's don't sell well, of
course they do, they're a much smarter alternative for city owners than
the larger cars. You seem to be confusing the work dedicated fleet
vehicles you mention above with salary packaged fleet vehicles. I can
get a Conformadore from Telstra(I work there now) at a gobsmackingly
cheap rate (they buy so many of the things as genuine work fleet
vehicles that the salary package rate is unbelievably cheap). I'm not
sure I want one though. If they did the AWD V8 Commodore ute on the mega
cheap list I'd be tempted, but a V8 Monaro in mid-life crisis red, well,
I'm not really that big a westie, and it's the only thing there that's
got the go to tempt me.
    Quote me a scale, they're now selling 14 a year or 1400 ?
No, but theur daughters do (and I'm serious)

And the rest, 77K plus 4K for the full length sunroof, plus 1K for the
nice mags (or 2K for aftermarket), plus a K for the decent sound system,
you won't get it fully specc'd for under 85K
    Baah where's your priorities !!
To be honest, you're very right, buying new cars is a mugs game (unless
you intend to hold them for at least 7 years), I always try to buy
recently secondhand (although some employers won't let you salary
package it then), let some other bunny take the depreciation hit. If you
want a car to hold it's value buy a BMW or MB, they've got about the
    best retained value around.
Yup, actually if you want a bargain, get a Magna, they have really bad
retained value, so you can buy a 2 or 3 yr old one for peanuts.

Blimey ! You very strange man you ! Hmm that would explain the Hyundai
    in your driveway then !
OK, now that I can cope with
Phew ! So if I don't get married I don't have to buy versatile value for
money boring cars ? Can I refer a pissed off girlfriend* to you to
explain why marriage is never going to happen ?

Oh I don't know, I found having enough HP to spin it up at 90K was kinda
exciting. Particularly when the rear tried to overtake the front. That
car taught me some driving lessons.

Most companies I have anything to do with have simply banned anything
that has fringe benifit attached *shrug*... obviously we move in
    different circles :)
The local ford dealer says of the 100 odd company vehicles he sells each
year about 2 or 3 are salary packaged (one of my previous vehicles was
the first one he'd done). Should I assume this figure is different to
    the national average then? *grin*
It was a magazine article, not online. As for salary packaged vehicles,
that's not really a 'company car' IMO YMMV.
They were quoting something like a several hundred percent increase from
a low base (off the top of my head, and wondering where that edition
    from VACC is sitting...).
OI! I'll give you girly men... you... you... leather wearing chain boi!
(not that there's anything wrong with that :)

If you'd said that I wouldn't have argued with you though :)

Coz it sounded like you were saying that hybrids _are_ better cars than
    small turbo diesels...
