dark mask, giggling maniaclly and illuminated from below by the harsh
glare of arc light flickering on and off.

Then I read it again.

They are illegal. It'll be either air pistols or replicas.
I believe realistic looking replicas are now banned too, though ICBW.

well, these things definitely looked like "real" modern handguns - I
wouldn't know for sure, having never actually handled an automatic
pistol, just a revolver.
