Agreed. As has been stated several times in this thread, providing
the V5 aids the tester when making the input wrt the test result. I
wouldn't have been able to test the MZ, as I didn't have the V5 - but
there were notices on the walls requesting the V5. All I was trying
to do was explain to SP in a reassuring way, why her mum may have been
requested to take her V5 with her. I see now what a mistake this was.

I wasn't asked for my V5 when I taxed the Wing the other day ...

Not any more. I've become unwillingly (and unwittingly) enmeshed in
so many well-intentioned explanations that have gone way off the rails
that I shan't be doing it again. I fully appreciate that I'm not
always correct, but there's frequently a grain of something useful in
there. When I'm called a liar after relating an anecdote (not in this
particular case, I hasten to point out) then that's quite enough.

That's because she felt sorry for you and thought you may get upset if
    she told you.

That and she'd rather not have a repeat of the, frankly upsetting,
shaking; swaying and trousers and pants as a hat episode last time she
said something that broke your idea of routine.

  5. I wasn't even asked for any of my documents when I was bounced down
the road 3 weeks or so ago. The copper who popped in to see me whilst
I was having a lie down in casualty told who I was insured with.
Presumably the information was gathered from these various linked
    databases.

    You hurtful rotter!

It's a lie: I did not put my trousers on my head.

Yep, one of my previous vehicles couldn't be tested as the VIN plate
was missing (bought from a dealer). Strangely the only place I could
get an MOT test on it was back at the place I bought it.

It was swiftly chopped back in with the same people. (with a few more
rigourous checks on the exchange car, natch) :=/

Ah, right. So, many years ago when I couldn't put my hands on the
log-book for the F11 Coupe, the fact that the Datsun dealership
requested the numbers from under the bonnet (that are also contained on
the V5), was utther tosh then? And no, I'm not deliberately missing
the point at all, just confused/annoyed/amazed/whatever that a
legitimate vehicle owner is required to take a V5 in for an MOT in
order to 'confirm' the identity of a vehicle, when this is already
quite easily obtainable from the vehicle itself.

Should you not be willing to be taxed and insured with your vehicle,
the above (although probably well-meaning by those who thought up the
idea) will not have an impact on those that currently do not take their
vehicles in for an MOT, nor have them taxed and insured.
I still think that's utter tosh. Confirmation of a vehicle identity
using a piece of paper which contains information that is not available
on the vehicle, when all other bits of info are?
That's been the case for a long time now, if you were outside of the
time period for the renewal being issued.

    Checks new V5C.

    Checks old V5.

Nope, no matter how I try, I cannot get 30-odd digit numbers using
either, nor using the digits under the bonnet.

    Hmm..
