Question for the foak. (Poss ping darsy?)

    The question:
Does anyone know an MOT testing centre for bikes in or near Enfield?

    The reasons:
Most car MOT centres won't do bikes.
Most web sites I've found don't differentiate between those that do
    and those that don't.
swmbo has a bike in need of an MOT, and lives in, near, or around
    Enfield in Norf London.

    The problem:
She won't post on here yet as she's a little shy, and is trying to
dictate wot I write here, but I'm resisting strongly.

    Matthews, Baker Street, Enfield town.
They did when I lived there, and I'm sure they still do.

Cheers. I've found him on yell now - gunsmith's right? (Silver St is
the same as Baker St if I remember correctly.)

Another slightly off-centre question - anyone know how much of a brake
lever needs to be there to pass an MOT? She dropped the bike and
broke the knobbly bit off the end of the lever, but as we reckoned
she'd probably drop it again in the near future, and she can get all
the fingers of one hand to grip it without trouble, we left it as is.

Bike's a B6 if you need to know...

  4. I don't know about the legalities, but that's a safety item so I'd
recommend it be fixed. Think about it -- if the next time she dropped it
the lever fell against her leg, would she rather the broken off bit or the
much larger ball-end tried to penetrate her skin? There's also the
possibility that the alloy has been weakened (aluminium alloys tend to
crystallise when bent) -- It's not common but I know at least one chap who
had a pre-bent lever braeak off on him in an emergency braking situation.

In the end we rang Mr MOTman and asked him before taking the bike down
there. He said it was fine as long as there was enough there for four
fingers to grip easily, and the end had to be "not sharp" - presumably
other people have thought as you do.

We hadn't considered that she might try stabbing herself as well as
throwing the bike on the ground, but it is a point worth
consideration. (Mebbe if I decide to get rid of her...)

    Thanks for the thought though.
Nah. Not in this instance. No bending at all. The sacrificial slice
in the lever end worked perfeckly and it broke at that point. She
filed the end flat <proud of herself> and bike passed MOT with colours
    flying.

oops - not been paying attention. Anyway, you've sorted it.

Out of interest, did you have a legal end-can on the bike? I am about
to MOT my 'blade, but if the MOT place was tame I wouldn't bother
swapping over onto the standard can.

    Yes, it was legal.

Not certain how you define 'tame' in this instance - I would say he
was chatty and friendly, the place was full of lumps of unidentifiable
grey metal, tins, oil, things on shelves etc. (So much so that it was
difficult to get the bike onto the rolling road thingy for the brake
    test.)

    Oh, and he likes guns.

'Fraid I dunno how to help more. Perhaps you could ring him and say
something along the lines of, "I've got a *cough* end can and an
*uncough* one. Do I actually have to swap them for this test?" But
all he has to do then is say "Yes", and you're buggered. Stick it
under your arm and take it down to show him?

it's a funny old shop - I've been in before just for a gander.
    probably a good idea - I've had Lozzo's recommendation for a place
about 30 miles away, but I'll give Matthews' a call to see what they
    think on the subject.
