  2. Have you tired their sign recognition quiz?

heh, q4, no answer for GLF.
    q7, none for 'show off'

and it doesn't correct you/point out your mistake if you get any
wrong, so how's that supposed to help learning?

  4. Quite. But I really have no idea what that red X in a circle on a blue
background is, something to do with not stopping?

I was going to lie and say I deliberately got one wrong for
    pedagogical purposes. Heh!

  6. Not enough to get it right. And, to be fair, all the answers were
*something* to do with not stopping/parking.

I do think it's a bit daft that there's no 'this is what it means for
future reference, love' bit at the end.

Clearways - are they something that happen in busy places then?

AIUI a clearway is just a stretch of road where stopping is
not allowed. I guess they can pop up anywhere.

Speed enforcement taking place today at these locations:
    A5 DIRFT to County Boundary

A 10m wide, 2 mile long straight drag with no turnings.
    A Very Dangerous Location.

Oh, I see, its got lots of trucks on it, and the speed limit for
trucks on that piece of road? 40mph.
    Other vehicles, 60mph.
I wonder how many trucks they caught doing an incredibly dangerous
    50mph?

I noticed, this morning, that yet another camera has popped into
existence on my journey to work.

That's, erm, eight on the way in, and, um, seven on the way home.

Wassat software, then, SD? Mapsource? Wot GPS you got and how do you use
it (if at all) for Gatso avoidance?

    GPS V Deluxe
I don't - I just stuck 'em on as waypoints.

    I got it because:

    a: it's a gadget
b: I'd just had a policy mature, and wanted to syphon summat off it
before 'er indoors went and did something "sensible" with it.
    c: I'd seen Big Tony's in action
d: I can put all my RBR landmarks in, and tel it to <find #48> for
    example, and off it chugs.

n.b. This is not good, when you've done #48 yesterday, and really
    meant to key in #49.

    #48 Silbury Hill, Wilts.
    #49 Ombersley, Worcs.

The built in, hardcoded, GPS in my head alerted me to the problem,
when it told me to go South on the M5.

I bought a GPS III plus through ebay recently and to be honest it's been
useful. I've set the destination and then downloaded the route from my
mapsource software. I don't really use the autorouting facility of the
software but it's useful that the GPS effectively gives you a map
centred on your position with the 'pages turned automagically' with your
    destination clearly marked.

Of course, if I'd bought the V I'd have the auto-routing stuff so it
    might be different.

Funnily enough it was my *camera* which kept telling me to go back to
Ombersley [1]. It took three trips before I could get a legible
    picture.

[1] Stone trough used for leaving food for plague victims. Currently
sited in a dark corner under tree cover, which ain't good for
photography [2[ with a bright evening sun throwing it into a sharp
    relief of blackness.

[2] With a cheapish compact digital with a flash not bright enough to
    excite Mrs Glow-worm.

Cool. AONTL and all that rot.

Ahh. I did have a crack at (with reasonable success) converting one of
the downloadable CV7 (or whatever) format Gatso overlay maps for use on my
GPS but found that doing so wasn't a huge amount of use so gave up.
    Ferrier's GPSIII, for me...
Cool. I like it for other stuff, too, like finding me the nearest Shell
garage when in an unfamiliar area although this is only useful if the map
    data is regularly updated...

I also like being able to go off on a whim; have a squint at a paper map,
say "Ooh, that looks like a fun road/pub/other outdoor event" and
/quickly/ stick a virtual pin in the electronic map and follow the
    pointer.

As others have argued, that's not necessarily the most efficient way of
    doing things (http://tinyurl.com/u63b), but it's a laugh!
    *cough*

    Yerss...

The might of the GPS V's internal routing I have documented before...

Having said that, I've since switched setup to "Best Route" which takes an
/age/ to plot initially and is all but useless at bike speed on-the-fly,
but has created some more sensible routes than the one in our Pembrey
    excursion.

As I've said elsewhere before, Garmin would be onto a real winner if they
kept the GPS II/III/V format but crammed in a lot more (preferably
portable modular, i.e. SD/MMC) RAM and a beefy processor and finished it
    with a USB connector.

They've got some of this right with the new 2610/2650 series (CF cards,
USB) and it's got an auto-dim backlight.

    But in other respects it seems less capable than the StreetPilot III;
the SPIII, like the GPSII/III/V isn't too fussy about the supply voltage,
so long as it's between 10 and 40 DC, the 2610/2650 are "limited" between
12 and 24 (ok, so I'm being picky...).

Also, the new 2610/2650 is a touch-screen device. All fine and dandy, but
likely not easy to use with motorcycle gloves on.

Perhaps Garmin should listen more closely to what their consumers are
trying to tell them they want rather than simply doing something "because
    they can".
