    (discriminate) for membership of a union or union activity.

    I think the actual phrase is "not recognised".
    You may be right. I know that when I joined they said "we don't have
    them".

    Even if this were the case the union would be able to provide advice
    and representation.

    If the workforce wish a union to be recognised as a negotiating body
    then the employer has to recognise it.

    The procedures to achieve this are complex but do make it mandatory
    for an employer to recognise.
