I had actually heard of the tart, purely because the mention of the name

I thought just about everyone would know who Zidane was - given that
he's one of the most prolific footballers of the moment.

 

Well, there are plenty on this NG that follow neither
'popular' culture nor footbal so it wouldn't really
suprise me.

FWIW, I do follow football and had heard of SEB but didn't
know the song reference, so had to have this paricular
joke explained to me when I was told it in the pub last
night, so I'm not in any real position to judge anyway )

I don't have a clue who he is, and I can't recall hearing the name
before. It must've seemed inconsequential at the time if I did.

 

Unless you followed the World Cup or have seen Real Madrid on the
box recently then there's absolutely no reason why you should.
It's not as if he's in the paper every five minutes like some
footballer's I could mention.
