More economical driving and riding

  1. Nothing changes. I stopped driving company cars years before fuel cards
but back in the day we had Green Stamps instead. **** the price of petrol
was the rule, fill up where you get most stamps regardless was our motto.

Indeed. I always fill up at the local 24-hr station, simply because it
suits me to keep it in business.

  3. Speak for yourself, gimmerman.
I worked out with the aid of an inflation calculator that I'm now
currently paying exactly the same for insurance as my old man was at my
    age.

The last paragraph is my rule of thumb for motorised transport. Putting
petrol in the vehicle should be something you don't even notice. You
can't afford it if you're worried about how much a tankful costs. Fuel
is simply the most frequent reminder of the cost of personal transport.

Run the figures through the moneysavingexpert.com budget planner for a
bit of a shock. I only really started to appreciate how much my cars and
bike cost when I started putting the figures into the gnucash accounting
system. Was a bit shocked at total expense figures for insurance, road
tax, MOT, maintenance and breakdown insurance. Since my vehicles are
mostly older bangeromic style I didn't even include depreciation or cost
of loans. I generally found that the cost of petrol matched all the
other costs based on an average of 12000 miles.

    They look quite cool.
It does occur to me however that I bought a Revolution Courier because I
wanted a super lightweight street bike and the motor weighs nearly as much
    again!

I think a rather ordinary suspension mountain/street bike might be a more
    appropriate donor.

It also happens to be a Tesco pay at pump station which is always cheap(er)
    anyway

Seems pretty good for a big barge.
I've been travelling to Leeds and Birmingham regularly. A1/M1/A38. Just my
normal m-way cruise speeds. So a satnav 85 on the cruise, 95 on clearer
stretches and 110/20 when completely clear. In several weeks not a *single*
car has passed me. I've waited for countless others to pull over. As far as
ICR only one bike has passed me. These speeds are considerably lower than
my every day use of the 911 elicited. The world has been immersed in
    treacle. Apparently.

Champ, others, are you finding same??

The Saab Aero return 27mpg at these speeds. Knocking it right back returns
    30. Who is going to spoil their life for 3mpg.

Almost a 20% improvement in economy. Not bad but extremely boring.

I was surprised too. Probably a lot of it is due to trying to
anticipate traffic lights and jams so I don't have to stop, rather
than the 10 mph drop in speed.
