Just tell her she can buy a handbag when she gets there.

Given some of your previous V quotes, I'd say that's a very good thing.

last time I went to Lake Garda I did a fly drive to Verona & used Limone as
a base. Had a couple of drives into the mountains. Worked out quite well as
we only had a week so had more nights in Italy.

We've just booked somewhere in, er, Malcesine. Next up, finding
somewhere in Riccione and picking somewhere to spend two days in the
    Alps proper.

Decided against doing a one-day drive to Innsbruck on the way down, now
it's just Calais to Cluses, which puts us within spitting distance of
the nine hour queue to get through the Mont Blanc tunnel. And then a
one-car Wacky Races to Rimini. Game on!

    which one?
good luck with that on MotoGP weekend
Narrowed it down to a region? I know a place in Malta, Austria which is
south of Salzburg which has some superb roads & scenery nearby. Similar
to the Enzian but a little cheaper at 48 euros per person for half
    board.

French autoroute tolls, petrol 1.64 euros a litre. V's credit card will
be molten before you get to Italy.

Gucci, I think. **** knows. It wore out pretty quickly, anyway.

Not as durable as the kilim I bought. Though she did at least use the
handbag, my rug's still in the brown-paper wrapping it left the shop in.

Catullo. It has aircon and wifi and was the last available room so we
snapped it up while it was there. No cancellation fee so if we find
anywhere better we might change it.

We have a plan. Not a cheap plan, but it solves a multitude of problems
(other than where to park for the weekend).

No idea. She's always desperate to get things booked as far in advance
as possible, whereas I like leaving them to the last minute just to wind
her up. With the exception of bits like the GP weekend in Riccione,
    where availability will be scarce.

When time is short, money makes up the difference.

no need to leave the hotel then!

Love the 1st review on Tripadvisor.

I must've walked past it on the way from the ferry dock[1] to the cable-
car. In the town, we spent most of the day sitting in the harbour
drinking beer & eating gelato. It was scorchio in late June.

Cablecar up to Monte Baldo is highly recommended if the sky is clear.

[1] foot ferry from Limone. A pleasant way to take in some views and
Limone would be a nice place for a half day trip.

Ha. Must confess, we hadn't checked any reviews. As it is, it seems to
be the usual mixed bag, though there seem to be a few genuine gripes
    about rooms not being available.

    Love the way the ratings go 5, 1, 5, 1, 5, 3, etc.

    Any alternatives you'd recommend?
It's on the list of things to do.

I thought I'd test this with my trip to Liverpool yesterday, 175 miles
    each way.

on the way there, cruise control at 70 worked out at 32.8 mpg. time 3
    hours (leaving at 13.45)

on the way back, 85, 31.2mpg. time 2.5 hours (leaving at 10pm)

doesn't seem to make that much difference.

yes, but according to Bruce, it's downhill on the way back which will
    skew the figures

  16. **** that, just get a Golden Motor or 9Continences, plus a Ping battery
pack and be done with it.

This occurred to me again this morning when I filled up with petrol at
    Tesco. 130.9/litre.

I wonder how many people have changed their driving habits to get
better economy, and then fill up at Braywick Service Station (about 5
    miles from Tesco) at 134.9/litre.

I suspect the difference in prices might be greater towards Reading due
    to the Adsa Effect.
