start later this summer because it seems very reminiscent of the 1938
games.

Personally, I can't wait for them to shoot themselves in the foot
(politically speaking).

I don't watch the Olympics and haven't for years it seems to be one big
advert for the 'sponsors'. Or they bang on about the athletes lives for
30 minutes and show 5 minutes of a sport.

Anyone see the utterly fascinating prog on 2 tonight about the building of
the forbidden city? The Chinese really are just playing catch up on their
own history.

A couple of modern facts crept in. The massive construction in and around
Beijing currently absorbs 50% of global steel production and 33% of global
concrete production. Blood Hell.

 

That's not my recollection of recent Olympic games (not that I'm a great
follower) but I suspect the difference is, primarily, we get the BBC and
you get some ghastly American channel.

 

When were in Atlanta in '96, we'd try to grab the highlights on TV in
the evening: you'd be forgiven for thinking that the USA won every
gold medal going - it's just that there was zero coverage of events
they didn't win.

The local paper barely mentioned it, except for MJ's world record in
the 200m, and USA Today ignored it completely.

Even some folk on the Metro didn't know why so many foreigners had
descended on their city.

 

I haven't watched in probably 20 years. I quite agree the BBC is far
superior to out shite.

 

The only thing I remember from Atlanta is the bomb.
