For further reading give The SCUM manifesto a read - there will be an on-
line copy around somewhere. There's an excellent[1] film about Valerie
    Solanas too.

    [1] Well, interesting anyway. <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116594/>

Something about an in-joke that passed its sell-by date the moment it
    left the shelf.

You were talking about `control from the centre'. It was Labour that
removed many of the controls over people's lives.
But that legacy was not left by Labour. If anyone is to blame, it's
the Tories---they had more power, for longer.
But as Champ has pointed out, the Tories were in charge for 88 years
of the twentieth century. How come you don't blame Churchill, Heath
and Thatcher for not removing corruption?

Probably, we could trace a lot of this back to when football hooligans
had their passports confiscated to stop them travelling to overseas
matches, even though they had not been convicted of anything.

And if they fell for that line, I've got a nice line in London Bridges they
    may be interested in.
    And don't you forget it.

Would you care to make your case that between 1945 and 1997, it was
the Conservatives who introduced the legislation to liberalize the UK?

This didnt really help did it?
"In January, three Outlaws members were attacked by a gang of Hells
Angels armed with machetes at Birmingham Airport - in full view of
    passengers and children.
One of those arrested, Neil Bissell, the deputy organiser of the
Bulldog Bash, remains on police bail."

Ah. Like most stats, I made it up, but I had some memory of reading
that the Conservatives had dominated elections in the 20th century

Hang on, that doesn't sound right. <googles furiously>

By my figures, the Liberals only had 12 years (1906 - 1918), and
    Labour had 23 years.

    <Mostly from
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_general_election,_1900
    etc)
No, I get 55 years. So more than half the century. Which was my
    point. Ahem.

Freedom to be gay? Freedom to have an abortion? Freedom to see what
you like at the theartre? Are these not freedoms you support? Well,
it was a Labour govt that gave them to you.

The Abortion Act was a private member's bill and a free vote.

Mostly. It wasn't talked down by the Government which implies a degree
of support. It was the 'best' solution for the Government allowing them
to claim 'it wasn't us guv' to the rampant anti-abortion[1] lobby.

I think the lobby of he HoC would have been an interesting place to
    eavesdrop at the time.

[1] Pro-life hadn't been coined at the time.
