  1. That was quite excellent.
The scenery was the star, though. I don't think I've ever seen the
weather be as good up there, so he got quite lucky.

I had an idea the west coast got a few midges - proved by the last
episode. What time of year are they the worst?

As soon as it gets warm.

The bastards are out as soon as it warms up and only go with the first
    really cold snap.

It can be wonderful - but it can be awful. Only time I've been to
Applecross I nearly got blown back over the Pass of the Cattle by the
    wind.

Compared to the rest of the year it does.

The little fuckers will be out and biting you until the sun goes down
with the evenings being the worst time.

Yes. There's even palm trees growing along the coast.

Lovely place. I've been twice, reasonable weather both times. The top of
the pass was in the clouds on the one trip but that added to the atmosphere
as it was only a short stretch.

There's an easy way to avoid the midges. When outside, wear motorcycle
clothing. Before dusk, find a pub and don't leave it until the bats come
    out to gobble the midges.

I've found that you can clearly hear the engines fire up and the
increase in radio traffic as they formate to begin the final run in to
the target is a give-away too.

As a guideline, three chaps I know rented a (fearsomely expensive)
private stretch of trout stream for a week a few years back. The fishing
was excellent, the company great, the accommodation outstanding.

They came home after three days, while they still had the strength to
    start the car.

The *only* place I have encountered more voracious midges is Sweden
around midsummer. I watched my arm withering after one of those bastards
latched on a few years back.

  10. Midges don't attack me much. When it's really bad I build a smokey fire
    and stand in the murk.

  11. It's at this point that I say (smugly) that I've never been bothered by
midges. Even when in Highland Scotland in May/June..

And that was even before I started injesting toxic chemicals on a
    regular basis.

  12. I've have a couple of holidays in Scotland.
The first time I was bitten really badly, even though I took all the
    precautions.

Second time I was in fear of it happening again, but I couldn't say no
as the BBC were paying for it on one of their holiday programmes.

Took all the anti midge stuff and had a week of:

    Sunshine.
    Warm weather.
    No midges.

And a lot of free food and drink.

Plus a brand new Sigma 33 yacht supplied for my use to sailing the Great
    Glen.
