This would make sense to me. Most seem to cap the cash back.

I think they did a few months back. I also have a Halifax gold card which
used to be the best deal but has been capped IIRC. There is no mention of
it on the Halifax site now. They don't issue them to new customers.

I know I stopped using the MSDW card just before I went to Croatia, in
favour of the Egg card. Probably due to the lower rate.

Banks really are cunts. As I have power of attorney over my mother's
investments as well as my own portfolio (hah) I'm forever checking interest
rates and commissions. I probably open a new account or switch credit cards
at least once every 6 months.

Have you looked on Martin whatsits site, err hang on...
    <rummages in links>

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

He makes it his business to find out all the best deals for this sort
of stuff. Claims to be in direct contact with high-ups in the finance
copmanies and often has more up to date info than branches and other
    employees of these companies.

It will require some reading, but no googling. Article about
'stoozing' as well (taking money from CC companies and investing in a
savings acount) which cropped up here a while back.

  8. You do? What on earth for? doesn't it drive you slightly mad being
that obsessed with securing the "best" financial return? I would never
have had you down as someone who would do all this nonsense.

Paul Corfield emerged from their own little world to say
It usually involves moving accounts within the same bank/building society
to get a higher interest rate on mum's cash savings. 0.5% extra interest
makes quite a difference in cold cash terms. As her attorney I would be
negligent if I did not keep a regular check on interest rates.

Normally it would not make sense to have so much cash in instant access or
short notice accounts. However, mum has made it quite clear that she does
not want to enter a residential home as her dementia deteriorates.
Therefore, as the rate of deterioration is indeterminate, I have decided to
keep a considerable amount of cash on standby so that I can adapt the house
or employ professional help as the need arises. As she is physically fit,
with only minor ailments rather than life threatening conditions, safety
and security are likely to be the primary considerations i.e 24 hour
    supervision.

With my own finances it is hardly worthwhile except for keeping a close eye
on the credit card kickback schemes. It's not a huge amount but is enough
to more than cover the insurance for my bike each year.

I have a mainly conscience driven view on banks rather than rates and
    returns.

Fortunately the banks, insurers and mutuals I use turn out to be pretty
    good too.
