What modifications have you done to your bike(s) and was it worth it? Or
    were you off your rocker?

    Me: GSX R 1000.

    1: Double bubble screen: 65ukp

Why? To force the airflow over my head and make long distance more
    comfortable.

Well worth it, it did exactly what it said on the tin.

    2: Hugger: 60ukp

Why? To stop the winter crap being sprayed over the rear shock etc.

It did just that, well worth it in my book

3: Stainless Steel braided hoses: 70ukp

Why? They look cool and they help the feel of the brakes

They do look the biz and the feel of the brake appear to be better.

    4: Scorpion End Can: 99ukp

Why? It sounds better. It frees up the mid-range. It saves wear and tear
    on the OEM one.

It certainly sounds better. I can't prove the mid range bit but it feels
more responsive. It's lasting quite well.

5: TRE. Can be bought for around 40ukp.

Why. It de-restricts the 300kph speed limit. Hardens up the first three
    gears.

Yes it does.I think. The first three gears are certainly harsher. It's
good to say, "It was restricted to 300kph but it's been de-restricted.
    Very high bullshit factor.

    6: K+N air filter.

Why? Better breathing therefore more power.

I can't really answer this one. It sounds a bit better and it does seem
to be a bit freer revving but it may all be b*ll*cks. BTW, it was
cheaper than the OEM filter which I needed to replace.

    What's next:

7: Power Commander. To help smooth out the power deliver.

8: Full Yoshi exhaust system. A bit more power can be bad. (But bad is
    good right?).

    VFR750FT
Modified the original gearbox through excessive wheelies and countless
    trackdays then replaced entire engine.

    GSX-R750Y
Modified the magnesium clutch basket into a mangled mess of debris which the
f*ckwits who 'repaired' then failed to clear from the sump.
This eventually modified the gear-wheel teeth.

    VFR750FS
Replaced the exhaust system with e Motad s/s system.
Less than a fortnight later the ownership of the bike was modified by the
    bike-thieves that pinched it.

<> bored us all completely to death with
wittery prose along the lines of:

    Me: GSX1400

    1. Ermax screen : for about £40

Why? Keeps the flies off and helps out when going over 160kph.

Worthwhile buy. Strained neck is a thing of the past...

    2. NWS Hugger : about 70 squid.

Why? Didn't like the standard tail piece of the GSX1400.

Looks the dogs nads, but really fiddly to put on. Also, have heard of
    problems whereby it looks skewed.

    3. Topline tailpiece : £150ish

Why? Adds to the dogs nads effect.

But is illegal. But so many French bikers have them, I'm not too
concerned. Mined Ewe, the indicators are probably too small. Dunno
about the tail/brake light. Ace or Ginge could comment better.

    4. Titchy number plate.

Why? 'cos a normal size one is naff.

    What's next?:

Braided hoses: to improve braking. Natch.

Wish list: Power Commander for better power delivery and top end
    power.
    Akro Exhaust system.

With both of the above, I could add about 20bhp to the back
wheel, but am not sure if I could be hassled with the
    legalities of it all.

    Me: GSF1200 VFR800 CBR600 CD200

1: Full Akrapovic race system (CBR)
    Why? More power, better noise.
Result: No surprises, just a bit of a **** at MOT time. 8/10.

2: Stainless Steel braided hoses (CBR)
Why? They look cool and they help the feel of the brakes
Result: I can't tell the difference, tbh. 3/10

    3: Revalved front forks (CBR)
    Why: better handling
Result: Fucking fantastic. Best thing I've done, bar none. 10/10

    4. Hugger (CBR)
    Why: protect rear shock
    Result: Dunno. Haven't looked. ?/10

    5: K+N air filter (VFR)
Why? Better performance, never have to buy another.
Result: Haven't noticed any difference, but over the life of the bike I
    should be quids in. 5/10

    6. Blue petrol tank (CD)
Why: the old one was rusty and fucked.
Result: I now have a West Ham colour scheme. 11/10

New shock and fork revalve (GSF)
    Race can (VFR)
    Turbo (CD)

Erm... dunno. It's hard to know, isn't it: before.

And anyway, I didn't notice any difference. Well, maybe they're a bit
better. That might just be a self-fulfilling prophecy, though.

Agree entirely. Mine was a bit less than that. Needs replacing now,
after the Paris carpark incident. Also looks much better (in black)
than the SOE item which it's now wearing again.
Dunno if the rear's been redesigned on th K3, but I've not found it
has too much of a tendency to do that.
Ah, well that's something the K3 has _definitely_ improved. Be
interesting to see how much difference braided hoses might make, but I
d be astonished if I preferred them over the standard article.
Frees up? What are you, mad or something? Any more free and they'd be
    going bakkrupt.
Yeah, I might try that one of these days, but I reckon I'll wait until
I consider 286mph inadequate. Not been above 175 so far, IIRC.
And only a good idea if you're getting it remapped for the different
    exhaust, presumably?
Eh? Surely the eprom's re-loadable anyway, isn't it? I assumed that
since Triumph have an upgradable one the GSXR one would also be,
thereby negating the PC value, no?
    Right :)

    Me: ZX-9R
Check. Keeps crap off and, more importantly, increased the green
    factor )
Check. About 50ukp at AP show, made on the spot but only two lines
rather than three. I even fitted them myself and they still managed
to be better than the originals. Fitted EBC HH pads at same time.
    Result.
Check. 99ukp it was. Sounds good, easy to remove/refit for MOT.
Probably not a lot. Maybe change the whole thing for a Z1000 next year.

    1989 FJ12

    1) Took off aftermarket flip up screen and put on dark tinted normal screen.
    £50 ish
Looks good, and means I can build up those neck muscles for a proper sports
    bike.

    2) Braided front hoses. £60
Seemed to make a bit of difference but see next mod.

    3) R1 Calipers £100
The old ones were so full of crud and corroded that they needed to be
replaced, so I thought why not.
Amazing difference. You could stoppie it now if the tyres were sticky
enough. Currently it just squeaks and squeals to a halt if you load it up in
the correct manner. Hasn't improved front tire wear though.

    4) Remus exhaust system £350
The old Neta system was falling apart.
More power, looks good, sounds good, still fit full panniers without them
melting. Weighs a load less as well, but it's all academic on an FJ.
The fuel consumption is now a bit random, it varies between 160 and 80 to a
tank depending on journey/state of mind [1]

    5) New seat cover £20
Stops me bum getting wet so well worth it.
New rear shock, the adjustment on the original item is corroded up and
probably wouldn't make any difference given its age.
    Stickier tyres, see 3 above.

    R1, ZX10R, GSXR...once I finish the kitchen....

[1] Must fix electric reserve switch currently stuck on open.[2]
[2] Found out after fitting new exhaust. At least it weighed less[3]
    [3] To push.

    Old Virago

    Screen
Engine bars, needed somewhere to mount spotlights and cruise pegs.
    Spotlights, useful on unlit roads.
    Uprated headlight bulb
Sissy bar with rack, got to have somewhere to tie tent, sleeping bags
etc on when going to rallies, also stops crates of beer falling off
    rear seat when at speed.
Pannier carriers, prevents throwovers touching rear wheel, extra tie
    down points.
Panniers, somewhere to put the beer that won't fit on rear seat.
Footpegs, prefur rounded than standard flat topped pegs.
    Chrome grips, to match footpegs.
    Stainless steel braided lines.
    Stainless spokes
    Exhaust

    New Virago

Engine bars, sissy bar and panniers already fitted
    Screen
    Spotlights now fitted
    Uprated headlight bulb
Mirrors, prefured the latter style rectangular mirrors.
Handlebars, new bars awaiting fitment, a lot greater cost than
expected bars were cheap but risers, master cylinder, clutch lever
holder, accelerator cable, clutch cable, all have to be changed:)
Braided lines will be fitted when bars are changed.

    To do
    Footrests and matching grips
    Stainless spokes
    Exhaust
probably a lot more when I get round to it:)

  15. < snip lovely Gixxer mods>

    Bike: ZXR-400

Mod 1: EBC Prolite discs & HH pads
    Reason: Old ones *utterly* shagged.
Result: No kidding, these are fantastic! However, there's no braking
whatsoever in the wet, probably because the pads have worn down to the
    metal.

    Mod 2: Scorpion Carbon Exhaust
Reason: Wanted a soundtrack, got a good deal.
Result: But of a let down, to be honest. Think the engine didn't have quite
enough oomph to bring out it's best.

    Mod 3: K&N Filter
Reason: Because you just have to (and it needed changing anyway).
Result: Not bad, especially when you're close to the tank.

    Future Mods:

Future Mod 1: Maxton Rear Shock
Reason: Standard shock far too hard for road riding.

Future Mod 2: Stainless Brake Hoses
    Reason: Cosmetic, improved feel.

    Future Mod 3: ZX-7R.
Reason: Current fancy bike. Will have changed by...ooh...that Tuono looks
    nice, dunnit?

No great shakes here, but here they are anyway.

Mod: Changed fork oil from 5w to 10w
Why: Forks were a little soft, and the feeling from the front end was
getting vauge. I wanted to learn a bit more about my bike (friendly
home mechanic did the job while I watched).
And: It worked, but not quite what I was expecting. The feel was
better, bumps were slightly harsher, but I'm happy. It did highlight
how the whole thing needs doing for a very good ride though.

Mod: Changed carb needle settings richer.
Why: Read about it on sv650.org, had a look at the plugs at a service
and thought I'd give it a go for a slightly happier engine. Also the
    learning bit as above.
And: I thought it was a little happier accelerating and holding a higher
cruising speed, but it was on the point of being too rich. The bike
would sometimes hesitate. I put it back to how it was shortly after.

    Mod: Fitted 010s.
Why: Bear makes a pretty compelling argument, there were no particular
    words against.
    And: Great fun.

    Future mods:
Swap for a bigger bike, or do the suspension and big-bore the engine.
