Ah. The chair I'm making spindles for is one of the
close-to-the-ground types, admittedly rather more elegant than the
examples I gave above, buit then it is a bit older than said examples.

I can only imagine the fracas that could result from installing one of
those rotating chairs at the bar in the sort of pubs I frequent.

well, the place I used one was in Wilton near Ross on Wye. The White
Lion[1], a quiet village pub with a very good restaurant in the old
    gaol.

Every now and then the place would descend into depraivity as it became
a regular drinking place for Oliver Reed in the mid 80s. He liked to use
a posh hotel on the A40 between Ross & Gloucester when he was filming in
the area. Reed & the landlord, Rob, became good mates. They were very
competitive with everything they did whether it was golf in the daytime,
gambling or drinking games. The funniest event was when they stripped
off and wrestled on the lawn, only finishing when they went off the edge
and down the bank of the River Wye.

The swivelling Captain's Chair, there were 2 at the short end of the
bar, allowed one to easily keep tabs on the entertainment. Sadly, I
missed all bar 2 of his visits.
