it's interesting that you say that. a recent showing at the track
indicated that the AMA series was closely on par with the MotoGP
series in relation to track time.

As it turns out, the latest bikes are so fast, and so easy to ride
(compared to MotoGP) that they can consistently turn quick lap times
    close to that of MotoGP.

Let's also not forget that MotoGP bikes are rarely afforded the
opportunity to travel in a fairly straight line for a good distance
before they must begin to brake for a tight corner; hence they are not
allowed to achieve their top end speeds.

Bill and a few of the others have been with me when I was stretching
it to 140+ without issues. I'm not quite sure how fast it will go as
I haven't maxed it out, yet. Based on my equations with the gear
ratio I am currently running it should hit between 155 ~ 160. If I
were to go back to stock gearing I'd be looking at 160 ~ 165+

And that isn't anything compared to the newer bikes.

A very key point here. I have a great article on all the latest bikes
and their lap times by multiple riders. If you look, there isn't but
maybe a few seconds (2 or 3 TOPS) difference between the slowest lap
    time and the fastest.

It's not how fast the bike is, it's how fast can you ride it. Most
    people just don't get it.

    enough.

Actual or indicated? Since the original thread started based on the
accuracy of some guy with a stop watch, a quarter mile, and a couple of
painted lines, actual speeds would be interesting to know.

After all, most OEM speedometers are pretty optimistic and get more so
the faster you go. Honda's usually good for 5% or 10% high on its
readings (except for one recent report of a recall for reading low).

I know it'll get 134mph in curves chasing a couple Porsche Boxters

Speaking of, on my last ride south, the road got a long...long stretch
in it and the conditions were just right. I nailed the Shadow and held
it. As usual, the normal wobble kicked in at 110mph. For some reason,
I just let it continue to run through and when it finally got past
125mph, the wobble stopped and I was pulling it out. I don't know how
fast I would've got from there, but I ended up looking down just
before letting off and the speedometer was touching between 135mph and
140mph. That was also fully packed for a week's ride (so figure about
an added 100lbs). Even with that, I didn't have the bike wide open and
very much quite possibly would've went faster had I stayed on it.

That's a good point. How about indicated. I know the track bikes can
hit it, but we are really talking about street bikes here and
    accessible mods.

Let's also not forget that the 205mph figure given for the rider was
    probably off by a bit.

Like you said, most people just don't get it. One person just wants to
argue endlessly about his own "opinion". Honda Civics are popping
180mph with mild mods. A stock Eagle Talon pops 150mph. I don't know
what the Eagle is good for, but I'm planning this next year of doing
cams and injector changes on mine to see if I can get more hp from it.

You have bikes that are "out of the box" doing top ends of 180mph+.
You have bikes hitting 150mph in a 1/4 mile blast. I for one don't
have a problem with someone claiming 205mph in a "hang on" ride on one
    of them.

Man, I used to HAVE an Eagle Talon. Great little car. I drove the
wheels off of it. I never modified it, though, just drove it.

One time I was at the Aprilia booth at the International Motorcycle
show. This kid walks up and looks at the Mile' and asks the guy "how
    fast is it?"

The guy responds "Well, that depends..... how fast are you?" I
started to smirk because I knew what he was getting at. The kid was
just interested in the raw numbers but had no concept of the
differences between twins and fours and how they applied their power
and what this meant to your riding.

It was a rather interesting conversation and the kid never got it. I
think that's why you see all the people on the jap bikes and not many
    other types of bikes.
Yeah, it is certainly feasible even if the cop messed up the timing a
    little bit.

That's the whole point of the original thread. 500 mph is possible if
the cop messed up the timing.

Are you somehow afraid someone is capable of riding a motorcycle at
those speeds and you're not? Is that what this is all about?

Actually in Texas and most other states you are technically under arrest
from the time you are pulled over until you are told you are free to go by
    the cop.

Most people don't realize that, the ones who do, would rather keep it that
    way..

I asked a city cop, once .. if running a stop sign was a jailing offense in
his town.. He told me No, but mouthing off to a police officer.. WAS.. I
told him, then that I'd STFU and take his ticket for running the stop sign,
but I didn't have anymore to say to him.. other than "see you in court".. I
did.. and beat the ticket.. I also had the opportunity to tell that cop, the
city prosecutor .. the judge and quite a few people in the room, what I
thought of their little whistle assed cop.. Then I left..

True enough. If anyone doubts it, the next time you're stopped, politely
ask if you're under arrest. If they say no, then explain that you are
now going to leave and see what happens.

Actually the 200mph barrier was first broken this year in MotoGP by an
    RC211V.
There are plenty of guys who go to Bonneville to try and make the 200 mph
club on their homebuilt rocket ships.
    Very few actually succeed.

4 bikes broke it this year, if I can count correctly.

    Scroll down to bikes.

Well.. now.. tell you what you might wanna do, ol' buddy.. think about it..
Brian is riding a one of a kind 1986 Shadow 1100.. Bags, windshield, jetted
carbs, raised handlebars, 1".. Custom exhaust and a few other goodies that
    no one can match..

There's been several speedsters run up with him.. That Shadow isn't built to
race, and he doesn't claim to outrun anyone, but he'll damn sure run WITH
'em.. A couple of those speedsters post on here.. That 1100 that Brian rides
has RUN with them more than once..

We're talking speedometer speeds, here and not by anyone's clock.. Like I
said, he's not supposed to be outrunning anyone, but he'll damn sure make
    them run their bikes ..

This Vulcan 800 of mine runs pretty good also.. And .. you seem to have a
problem with some of the speeds that I've run on it's speedometer.. To be
clear.. neither of us are riding racers, but our motorcycles will run the
way they are designed to run.. There's a whole heap of folks on this
newsgroup that have run with us that way.. Doubt all that, you want to,
but.. it's a fact.. Your motorcycle will run that way also, if you run it..

The real significance of that is that the bike was able to do it on a
straightaway during a race. They don't usually have much time to get
the bikes all the way up to speed.

Not 100% sure about this, but I'd bet more than four make it that are
really trying. They already hit over 250mph on a bike this last year.

    The record is over 330.
But the bike must've cost a FORTUNE.

Posted the wrong link last night...damn frames. Or maybe I was too pissed
off from my recent brush with the law. Can you believe a speed triple can
    do 70mph?
