Why are people so slow?

 

....and why does OE insist on grouping threads based on the subject rather
than just the References: header?

 

Why do people bother to use OE when they know it is crap ?

 

laziness.

 

It's all about *not* bothering

 

I like it as an e-mail client.

 

I like Outlook, except that it insists on spell-checking the quoted text
if you use quoted text markers. As I like to spell-check things
(because, though I can spell, I can't type), this makes bottom-posting
email replies a real pain in the fucking arse.

 

You could, but how are you going to explain the missing words? In my
experience, a spell-checker can help with defective typing, but not
defective thinking.
