Seven of us are off for a bimble around Minehead this Weekend (Friday to
    Sunday)
anyone suggest good bike roads in the area to give a good thrashing?

A39. I did that Saturday on the Tig, with pillion & very full top-box &
    tankbag. It was 'interesting'.

I went up it in May on the Strom with just me and some luggage and it was
    interesting then too.

I honestly would not want to go down it - ever. When it's icy it must be a
    loooooooad of fun.

The A396 from Minehead down to Bampton rocks. Other than that, the
A39/A399 through Lynmouth to Ilfracombe, & pretty much any of the roads
    over Exmoor.

If it's wet, watch out for the diesel slick on the A39 east of Minehead
    - it was fucking huuuuge when I went through Saturday.

THis would depend on the bike though surely as I'm not sure I'd want to take
a GSXR on some of the roads in Exmoor, especially if it's been raining - a
Tiger/Strom on the other hand... :)

We came back down it Monday - it was much easier as the front wheel
stayed on the road. The smell of overheating brakes from the VW camper
in front[1] wasn't too pleasant though.

[1] Who stopped in Porlock behind a queue of parked cars waiting for
the traffic coming the other way to clear, then didn't move when it had
cleared, at which point I realised he had parked. Luckily his window
was open so I could inform him of the error of his ways.

This is probably true, but I'd happily take the MV on any of the ones
I've done, although the Tig would definitely be more fun on some of
    them.

I think Porlock Hill would be hard work on the MV though - I'd probably
have to do a 3-point turn on the first hairpin.

Vass emerged from their own little world to say
A nice circuit is A39 west to Lynmouth, B3223 south to Simonsbath,
Dulverton. Then north on the A396 back to Dunster/Minehead.

Despite what that PFF dwb says the roads are fine on a sports bike. I've
ridden it on a VFR750 and the rest of the group consisted of a mixture of
    CBRxxx and the like.

    <nibble>

I rode the bits through Exmoor on a damp, misty day when heavy overnight
rain had dumped gravel and mud all over the roads.

I was quite glad to not have the GSX-R at that point :)

I have mostly lived in rural areas where roads are always covered in
gravel, mud, diesel and shit applied by Farmer Giles and his cousins.
Admittedly, riding is less stressful on the GS: partly due to it handling
the conditions better but also the increased visibility enables me to see
    hazards earlier.
