"Mind if I stick this stiff on your drive for a while?"

Actually, I'm pretty sure that following up "not dying" with "winning"
is what he would have wanted. But ISWYM.

  2. Too right; they might have left him a bit longer so he could fertilise
    the roses.

I think that family should remove the wall and gate, it's clearly a danger
to TT riders. Alternatively, rigor mortis sets in, put a wheelbarrow in
    front of it...sorted.

I've taken time to ponder before responding to this. On reflection, I
think it's only "insensitive" if you work for a tabloid newspaper.

If you race there, you *know* you could die. And, in that knowledge,
I think most racers subscribe to the "once you're dead, you're dead"
philosophy. So, *he* wouldn't have minded, I'm sure. I would also
guess (and it is only a guess) that any friends or family with him on
the Island would tend to the same view.

So, I think the only people who could get upset are the householder
and the newspapers. None of us give a **** about the latter, but I do
perhaps agree that having a body left on your drive could be a bit
disturbing for many people, and the medical crew could have been a bit
more discreet. However, access to that part of the course is pretty
limited, so I'm not sure what else they could have done.

In relation to the "bad PR" point made elsewhere in the thread - Manx
people are very independent, and no amount of huffing or puffing by
the tabloids will have any effect on them. The only thing that I can
see causing the demise of the TT is the slow gentrification of the
place due to its newfound prosperity from offshore financial services.
But I think it'll be around for quite a while yet.

Bear emerged from their own little world to say
This would just mirror what has happened on the mainland surely? Village
bakeries, post offices, police stations & schools have closed. Tourism
is not enough to keep them open when their existence is determined by
economic rationalisation. It's not unusual for children to travel 20-30
miles to a school in many parts of the UK for example. At least for
those on the IoM the distances will not be as great.

Not sure I get your point. There's nearly 100k people there, and
rising, many working in financial and legal services. They all need
food, drink, building services, garages, etc. No matter how many go
over for a one week biking bunfight (and it's usually estimated at
around 20,000), it no longer makes a essential contribution to the
economy. This is shown by the fact that the biggest single problem
about visiting the TT nowadays is finding somewhere to stay - there
just isn't enough holiday accomodation anymore.

20k is the figure I've seen for the TT. Dunno how many for the Manx,
but it's a fraction of that (maybe 5k, tops).
