violent but leaving a clear message that I didn't expect my families
safety to be compromised and that if necessary I would take steps to
protect my family. Potentially threatening would be close.

I don't hold the position that you should mind your own business
precisely because in this case I believe it *is* your business.
Discussions of children and road-safety have some merit but, IIRC Horse
is somewhere around 7(?) at that age I don't think it's realistic to
expect a child to have sufficient understanding.
