Very odd indeed. I wonder what weight difference there is between this
design and a traditional radial pneumatic tyre.

Asking a lot from you I know but if you had actually read the article
instead of just looking at the pictures you might have noticed the bit
that suggested it was within 5% in terms of weight and rolling
resistance and stuff and within 1% for fuel economy calculating
purposes. Not bad for a new technology.

On the face of it, much less weight.. Dunno what that would do for bikes
    though.

Did NASA ever say what they were using for the mars rover wheels?

    Those things look suspisciously similar.

    Nidge says...
NASA used wire mesh for the wheels. IIRC they would have collapsed if
the rover had been used on Earth.

It looks to me like the rim, although flexible, has enough stiffness to
support the vehicle weight, and the spokes at the opposite side are in
tension. So, not that different in principle from an old-fashioned spoked
    wheel.
Not that version, but I could visualise a bike version. Remember the
    segmented effort with pivoted plates?

I remember that one. I think it was in New Scientist or summut. It
looked a bit of a bumpy ride.
