Yep, first thing that entered my head when I saw the comment.

I'm fairly sure that the level would remain static once the
    temperatures had settled.

Apparently the thermal expansion of the sea could account for quite a
significant proportion of any sea level rise. Presumably this takes
into account the thermal expansion of the land as well.

But it would raise sea levels anyway, given that a portion of it is
currently above sea level. The density thing is clearly also true -
it's fairly basic physics - but I very much doubt if it would be in
    the least bit significant.

Doesn't a floating object (e.g. an iceberg) displace its mass in water? If
so, it wouldn't raise sea levels when it melted, would it?

Not at all: it was specifically about a certain phenomenon, not global
    sea levels per se.

    And I was wrong.

    Bollocks.

I thought that, but thinking about it further, I suspect that the
issue is that the ice is all stacked up in one place, whereas the
fresh water will flow and spread across the entire ocean, in time.

You could probably find a solution by comparing the total density of
the ice+brine divided by the mean sea level (*including* the mean
height of the ice) with the total density of freshwater and brine
divided by the mean sea levels of the latter two mixed.

    Or something. ICBA.

  12. It always amuses me how the Merkin gummint does this Big Reassurance thing.
And states the bleeding obvious, too. Some years back, I went to where the
big sequoias grow. There's one you can drive through, so we did. Go figure.
When you get to the other side, there is a BIG sign, saying "STOP! Did you
notice that the tree you just drove through is hollow?" Well, no shit,
Sherlock, I thought it was a remake of The Philadelphia Experiment.

And then, there was the sign seen over a roller towel in a burd bog in LA.
"WARNING! This is only for drying your hands. Do NOT place neck in this
roller towel. Death by hanging may result." I swear to the gods of ukrm that
    this is True.

  15. I'd have been more than impressed if they'd had one by the hand drying
machine, warning you not to poke your fingers in it or "Death by
    electrocution may result".

  16. In the leaflet accompanying a circuit tester I bought this morning was a
strict injunction to not touch bare current-carrying wires, as there was
a "danger of injury or death by electrocution". No shit, I thought.

That was understandable in a way, but one was also discouraged from
inserting the batteries incorrectly for the same reason. FFS.

Ace banged the rocks together and said:
But ice is less dense than water (hence a glass bottle of water when
frozen sometimes cracks the glass bottle).

So the increase in density will offset the rise in sea levels. (by a
    fraction of a percent)
