well this moring the vfr died, no dash lights nada. Suspected the
fusible link, checked the 30A fuse but checked out ok.
While putting the fuse back in I noticed the connector that plugs into
the starter selenoid pack had completely burnt. there were bits melted
in the female socket and the main possie wire was slightly melted
    against an adjacent wire.

Seperated the spades connectors from the block, cleaned them and
pushed them into their respective lugs. Discarded what was left of the
block. All this done by the side of the road on the way to work this
morning so I was thrilled I got to use the leatherman.

Now as i contemplate a permanent fix this weekend, is there an
alternative connector to the old spade'n'lug style able to carry the
    starter relay current?

I dont mind reterminating everything as long as i get some decent
connectors.I was also reading somewhere that dielectric grease should
be used to pack the terminals to prevent corrossion. Where does one
    buy the stuff?

No don't! Solder is a lead based joint, which over time, and with a
bit of vibration, will crack and go high resistance then burn, and you
    are back where you started.

Crimp joints on spade connectors makes a far better junction, as long
as the joint is clean. Just buy good quality connectors and you should
    be OK.

Meaning not the crap you get in most car joints and even Jaycar. Those
    dreadful hard plastic insulation ones.

Radio Spares is the go http://www.rsaustralia.com search for "Push-On
    Terminals"

Get spades and covers. Buy a bag of 100, and you are right forever.

I'd be looking at the R/R as the likely culprit, & if it is, the
battery is prob fried as well.
