It looks like I will be taking the bike to Newcastle next weekend. My
basic plan is to take 2 days to get there, and 2 to get back, avoiding
    the hume.

The obvious route is via the coast, but I'd appreciate the wisdom of
your experience - any great roads I can't miss, good cheap places to
stay 1/2 way, some magic way to avoid Sydney itself, etc.

    I'll even promise to write a trip-report when I get back :)

    Thanks,

    Mark.

  2. Look at the map and pick all the little squigly, criss crossy roads.
Tathra pub is good on a weekend, Tintaldra is good all the time.

Catherine Hill Bay pub (just south of Newc.) is good on a Sunday arvo.

To go from Bathurst to Boorowa, take a left off the highway about 25km
from Cowra and go via Woodstock, Wyangala dam, Darby's Falls,
    Frogmore, Boorowa.

It's a similar distance, and far more interesting than the road from
Cowra to Boorowa. (And you're far less likely to encounter a
    policeman, if that's a concern).

Only problem is I was born in Adelaide, so now have an aversion to going
    anywhere near it.

Apart from that, good idea! :)

I'm a little confused about one of these legs:

    Tumbarumba->Cabramurra->Tintaldra

My map shows that 17k out of Tumbarumba, there is a T junction, with
left taking you to Cabramurra, and right taking you (via Tooma) to
Tintaldra. Going via Cabramurra than back to Tintaldra shows (a) a dirt
section, and b) it seems to be a long way around.

Any clues about that? Did you maybe mean Tooma or Warbrook instead of
Cabramurra? More to the point, any reason I would *not* turn right and
head directly for Tintaldra? It is on Melways map 523 if you want a
look, and I'm also using Garmin's MapSource product on the PC, for use
    with the GPS)
Cool - thanks! I'm adding this entire route to my GPS. I've a vague
plan about creating a repository of GPS routes (using the GPX XML
standard), so one day this might even be available to others.

(And you're far less likely to encounter a
It is ;) I get my license back tomorrow after being caught doing
exactly 30k over the limit (and the bastard cop didn't even drop 1 k off
the speed to avoid the automatic 1 month loss). I now have 4 points to
last me the rest of this year, so I've gotta be careful.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

Forget the highway to (near) Cowra, head south from Bathurst via Trunkey
Creek, (25km of dirt here) Crookwell, thence Goulburn or Gunning. Or
Bathurst via Oberon or Rockley, then Taralga to Goulburn (40km of dirt, a
bit nasty when wet). Too bad if you want to be in Boorowa! (there is a
road just north of Crookwell going to Boorowa)
I don't see *anyone* between Trunkey Creek and Crookwell!

  14. (a) is wrong, no dirt, though the road was blocked due to them fucking
around with the power station last time I went (tried) to go through
(December). The portable sign on the corner wasn't working but it's a nice
ride anyway. Beware the logging trucks!

    (b) That's the whole idea. It's a nice loop.
    Depends how thirsty you are!
