but it's not insufficiently signed, its a toll road, the fees for MC
are in the same location as for every other user.

the fault is with the people that thought it was free

I can't remember if it's signed properly or not and I have no intention of finding out until I need to use it again . . .

Taking three and a half months to send a bill is absurd.

It reminds me of the case for similarly delayed $peeding fine$ . . . If it is soooo dangerous to go 3kph over the posted speed limit how come they take soooo long to "alert us" to our occasional dangerous practices? I can see some smart arse drumming up a class action one day against the authorities for neglecting their own self-declared duty-of-care!!

Now let's see how many people take that out of context or only read (any) three words . . .

    I don't agree.
Taking three and a half months to round up the folks who were misled is simply ridiculous. Their business plan depends on a relationship with Vic Roads to determine the owner of any number plate (not already on their register) so don't give me any garbage about the immense time it takes to pass a number through their super-tax-collecting-computers . . ..

I regularly ride on the CityLink toll free; and understood that the rights were reciprocal. Perhaps I should stare at a square box or a square newspaper to see their adverts . . . but I don't (and neither would an interstate or country visitor). Small price for me to pay I'd say.

My point was that I am sorry for anyone else who made the same genuine mistake who has travelled on EastLink at ~$9 a trip thinking it was free .. . .

The toll road IS sufficiently signed that motorcycles have to pay, and
it has been widely advertised before it opened that tolls would apply
    for bikes.

  7. I would beg to differ. If you have been riding toll roads in a city and
KNOW that motorcycles aren't charged for a toll roads in that city, why
would you check to see if you're being billed when you ride on a toll
road in that city. Just because it happens to be a different toll road
does not mean that you will know that different rules apply.

Or, in my case, I'm well aware that Melbourne does not charge tolls for
motorbikes. It's common knowledge (I've never heard otherwise until just
now). What, apparently, isn't common knowledge is that the rule only
    applies to SOME toll roads.

    Widely advertised where?

There were no television adverts on any of the Bendigo TV stations that
any of the bike riders at work have seen (there are 8).

There were no adverts in the Bendigo or Castlemaine or Midlands
newspapers that any one at work has seen either.

I haven't heard a radio advert or announcement to that effect on the
    local radio stations either.

And I haven't seen a notice on the City Link website (yes I'm aware they
are different companies) which would have seemed a fairly obvious
    location for one.

I'm guessing that it was advertised in the Melbourne area (and that's
not very wide compared to the rest of the country).

No different to tollways in sydney or Queensland then is it?
I have no idea about to tollways there but we were saturated with
eastlink ads when it was first opening here both in the papers and on tv.

  10. Not everyone buys the papers and not everyone watches the TV

What the Eastlink operators should have done, is get the names and addresses
of all Victorian motorcycle owners and send them a letter telling them about
the tolls if they happen to ride on their tollway

  11. Exactly what is being said to try and convey to some who will not listen
because they happen to travel on those toll roads every day or even once a
week, they wrongfully believe that everyone would or should know

As a transport company we receive updates on city link both in Melbourne
    and Sydney.

We have never heard anything from EastLink.

I'd say that makes EastLink at the very least less informative...

Seems like they put forward facing cameras on Eastlink specifically to capture motorcyclists

What a load of nonsense. The cameras are there to capture all passing
vehicles, not just motorcycles. The percentage of the road fleet
which are motorcycles using the toll roads would never make it viable
for the tolling operators to implement special technologies for that
purpose alone as Citylink discovered. Citylink has had forward facing
cameras for years also, and a mechanism for detecting and billing
motorcyclists if they so decided. Citylink made a business decision
to not charge motorcyclists. Eastlink made a business decision to
charge motorcyclists. There is no conspiracy. They took large
advertisements in the newspapers when the tolling commenced and the
information has always been available on their website.

I wasn't claiming a conspiracy, just incompetence or indifference.

If they spent the major $ for large advertisments in metro newspapers
then the small extra amount for suburban ones wouldn't have been much
    extra in % terms.

They either didn't care or didn't know people would be effected (one is
bad service and the other is bad management).

If you had to decide between forward or backwards facing cameras; surely the ability to capture the drivers face is fairer for those drivers needing to dispute who was driving the vehicle at the time?

If the cameras are duplicated then the forward facing ones are there for motorcyclists . . .

I have taken the front plate off my car, saved 2 photo radar fines in the
past 6 months and takes away the aiming point for Lazer Speed units.

If pulled over I will feign shock at someone stealing the plate.
