    Hi,

After being quoted nealry $1k in labour, not parts, by Action
Motorcycles in Mitchell to do a top end rebuild on my 91 rgv I'm now
looking for a more sensible estimate. Can anyone in the Canberra
region recommend anyone? I'd prefer if they offered a pick up service
as the bike is now partially dismantled.

  2. let loose on an internet connection and the
    unfortunate result was...
A top end rebuild on a two-smoker (assuming you're handing over a bare
engine) should *not* cost $1K unless you're opting for the hi-
performance unobtanium rings and painting the pistons in repsol colours.

Hell, you ought to be able to do it yourself in an afternoon if there's
no machining work needed - there's no valve train or cams etc to worry
    about.

Unless of course you have scored bores and a bent head - but maybe we
should leave your physical condition out of this

Rick Miller in Holder (check the white pages under R A Miller) is worth
a call. Dunno if he does pick-ups, but he seems to know his stuff.

what are you paying someone for???

its so easy to do an RGV , i would have given you a hand to do it for
the appropriate payment of bundy and coke except im round the other
    side of the world

parts you are looking at about $300 , hopefully you dont need
powervalves or barrels as that adds $$$

There's nothing bent or broken in the motor. My only concern is the
power vavles and ensuring they're installed/operating correctly. I
used to race motocross and could do the rest with my eyes closed.

Thanks for the advice guys, when I ring I'll be sure to tell him some
    of his customers directed me.

Atec: You don't need to remove the motor for top end surgery on an rgv
and even if you did $500 is a very bad joke. How Action Motorcycles
figure it's a 14 hour job has me beat.

It should not be necessary to remove the motor to pull the jugs off an
RGV should it? Hell, I can get the jugs off my RZ500 with the motor in
    the frame.

Standard all the way. You can mess about fitting YZF 600/1000 front
ends, but I'd like to keep it reasonably stock.

Ill have to think about it , but Im thinking of making a few power mods
and frankly I prefer not to stop a meter the wrong side..

You can bang R1/R6 front ends in there too, but any of that stuff is
waaay out of my price range, plus I'm sick, I like the stock look. Also
a GSXR750 17" rear wheel is quite popular choice for better rubber options.

A few power mods eh? Going the full TSI? ;-)

But like the man said, there's no replacement for displacement. Mine's
bored out to 58mm which I think makes it 524cc (I cant find the stroke
and I'm not going to check it), and I got a set of Boysen dual stage
reeds in. Are you reading http://www.rzrd500.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html
    Some knowledgeable chaps there.

I thought you bought Fletchs bike with the King Kenny paintjob? Hmmmmm.
Different barrels eh? Wot chew got there? I've been wondering if
anyone has fitted something like YZ250 jugs. An RZ1000 would keep you
on your toes. Fitting WR500 jugs would be even more interesting, but
apart from anything else, the YZ and WR could have longer strokes which
    could bugger things up.

    Cheers,
    Ash
