In which case it's 13, although most of them were read before I was 20.

And if anyone wants to moan about me following up to myself; go ****
    yourself, with all due respect.

I've read all but two (the Harry Potter and Winny the Pooh entries). I
haven't voted for any of them. Some of them are great books, but I
    don't "love" any of them.

FFS - one last time - this BBC thing is nothing to do with how good
the books are - the results are merely indicative of what those people
who could be bothered to vote for claim are their "best loved" book.

It's *nothing* to do with how good a piece of literature any of the
    books are.

I think I will. I've got a fair bait of travelling, hanging around
airports, etc. next week so I'll stick them on the Clie and see how far I
get. I also have a paper copy of Altered Carbon (bought it after it was
recommended here) that I wan't to get through as well.

    Just because it's a children's book doesn't mean it's not good. I've
just finished reading Noughts and Crosses which had me reading well into
the early morning without realising it. Before that I read Holes which
I also thought was a good book and story.

I've read only one of them. None of the others would at all inspire me to
read them - and the one that I did read I found intensely boring, all the
while wishing that I was on the last page.
    Guess which one it is?

Lord of the Rings! (all three of them)
Had I not seen the film I'd have not read the book - had I read the book
first, I'd certainly not have wanted to watch the films.

I was going for a sort of surreal insult. It obviously didn't come
    off.

    I think so, but I don't think I'm that discriminating a reader. I
bought two books at an airport recently:
    1. Far from the madding crowd (Hardy) - Hadn't read it for a while and
    wanted something 'relaxing' (long flight).

    2. Some Flashman book. I think McDonald Fraser only wrote one plot and
just changed the characters. Still, it's always a heady mix of
    cowardice, thievery, bigotry and shagging.
You *have* to read Jude. It is a really depressing book. I read it
often and enjoy it in a perverse way[1].

[1] Well, my life's not *so* bad then is it.

    darsy :
Calm down darsers. I was talking about all the Bronte sisters & Tolstoy
and stuff in the list. Books that I've started and disliked, despite
them apparently being 'classic' or 'great' lit.

On the top 100 list I'd probably have to have Watership Down as best
loved, despite not particularly wanting to read it, just because it
reminds me of a time some 20 years ago that was reasonably special.

Bah! it was advertised as "read this and you'll never eat rabit again".

I read it and went snaring the same day and sent some of the 50 or so
rabbits I bred for meat off to the butchers.

"doesn't do what it says on the tin"

    Much closer to the truth.

Wonder if they did that to advertise the TV film of the Doner party?

You can vote for trilogies providing, at some point, they've been combined
    into a single volume.

Hence you can vote for all 3 of the LOTR, but not all 4 of the Harry
Potter's (boxed sets of x books don't count as a single volume).
