Almost being the operative word. It's like the two MG "sportscars" I was
stuck behind the other day. How the hell can you drive something that is
supposed to be a sports car in such a manner that you hold up someone
driving a Seat Alhambra with a 1.9 diesel [1] engine. I even went faster
    round corners than they did.

[1] the older less powerful lump too.

    Rusted and ropy.
    Dog-eared old copy.
    Vintage and classic,
    or just plain Jurassic:
    all words to describe me.

    In communiqué
Nah, my preferred head gear when driving mine is a woolly hat.
I drove it to my mate's in Rugby a few weeks ago. I virtually never
drive it on motorways but was in a hurry. Nothing, but nothing, passed
me except a sports bike. Then we had a jolly good blast round some of
his local B roads to our lunch destination.

The slow ones are usually Mk IIIs. Lardy things after the wonderful Mk1
and the owners tend to pootle in them. You do see the occasional
over-restored Mk1 being cosseted, but spot an original one with slightly
frilly hood like mine and it will probably be being thrashed along
    making progress.

You don't know the difference between a sports car and a performance

  7. I'm not surprised.

MG's were never fast, never handled, and broke down all the time. Now
are only driven by old gits in tweed caps who see them through a rose
tinted mist believing that they represent some golden age of motoring
    that never existed.

Mines uber clean & tidy, it gets given the treatment *all* the time, thats
    what it's for.

Brilliant little car, awesome fun for **** all outlay.

I'll let you know how the coilovers are..

Very clean and tidy isn't necessarily 'over-restored', though I'm not
sure about the look of your wheels TBH. I'm sure you treat it in the
    manner it deserves.
Indeed. I thought I detected a slight misfire at idle on mine after the
motorway thrash, but it didn't last long. I was a bit suspicious that
they may have disturbed a sensor when checking emissions and changing
the cat. Seems to be going better than ever now.
Please do, but I am trying not to blow the proceeds of selling the Voxan
on the MX5, tempting though it is at this time of the year. I'm off to
sit on a Shiver this afternoon.

Hah. I've done my time fettling other people's MGBs. The A60 GT, we
used to call it. POS, we also used to call it: didn't go very well,
didn't stop very well, refused point-blank to go round corners. OTOH,
a lot more survived than the MGC, most of which were killed by going
    straight on round a bend.

With a *lot* of work it could be persuaded to be something like a
sports car i.e. outperform contemporary family saloons, but you'd be
much better off buying a faster car in the first place. It had as much
of a sporting pretension as a Triumph Stag.

Modern MGs were quite surprising, however: the Montego and Metro Turbos
spring to mind - but their comparatively rapid engines were not matched
in the braking or handling departments - which made making progress
    less entertaining and more sphincter-exercising.

I must, therefore agree with the OP, sadly. The Triumph branch made
much more entertaining cars which at least outperformed the weekday
    cars of the time.

"A", perhaps, old man. "The" - I don't think so.
Only off Beachy Head. It would have landed on that rusting pile of
    CG125s, best place for it.

As Clarkson once said of some "normal" car I unremember which one:
"And at 70mph it will overtake a Lamborghini doing 65!"

I have a motorcycle that will do 180mph or thereabouts (allegedly).
It's the only motorbike I own, and sometimes, I just fancy a quiet-ish
    pootle.

I'm surprised that I don't see posts on here saying who was the twat on
the black Hayabusa that didn't go over 130?!

Could a 2cv do 70mph? I don't think any of the ones my parents and
sister had did, but they were old and knackered.

Carries more shopping than a Porsche Carrera Turbo, without the need

Same number of wheels as a Rolls Royce
Automatic sunroof. When the sun shines you automatically get out and
    roll the roof back.
    Or something similar
