I was riding to King's Langley for a league game about three years
ago, when it dawned on me that I really didn't want to go anymore. I
saw the season out, and the feeling didn't go away.

It wasn't a "form" thing - I was never any good, anyway, it had just
lost its point[1], iyswim.

I've got lots of good memories, and I've still got my clipping from
the Watford Gazette from 1997.

Looks like the club has finally folded too, after 135 years.

Still, I've got my club record [2], that'll now remain for ever - most
ducks in a season.


[1] Enjoyment.

[2] There are others, but that's my favourite. Least favourite is
being the only captain of an Ibis team ever to concede an individual
double century.

Was up at Hawick yesterday; took a detour on the way back up near the

One of those ducks was particularly dumb: playing Old Actonians, a
team we'd played many times before.

I walk out to bat, mid-off runs up to the bowler, chats, and then runs
all the way to long-off, by the sightscreen.

I take my guard, bowler runs up, drops in a lovely little half-volley
on off-stump, and I stick it straight down the afore-mentioned
long-off's throat. He didn't have to move.

Thats my team that is, and yes, on EVERY{1}occasion i went to the Kassam
Stadium this last season i was dissapointed, even the burgers were crap.

Heh. It was nice to see them win. It was also good to see the actual town
rally behind them a bit - lots of red and white etc.

The ground is 2 minutes from my house so we got to listen to the celebration
party too...

That said, there weren't quite so many people out for their open top bus
parade as the one Chelsea did ;-)

Banstead weren't too chuffed about the 70, when it was mentioned that
it took me to 100 runs for the season - in August.

Bizarrely, I did once. I think that volunteering to keep wicket when
no-one else wanted to might have swung it.
