Doing 104 mph on the M6 Toll Road. To the latter part of the article it
    states:

'A spokesman for anti-speeding campaigners, Brake, said: "Driving at
excessive speeds like this greatly increases the chance of a car crash.'

Now, I used the M6 Toll Road on Tuesday, and given the volume of traffic
and the conditions at that point in time I wouldn't have thought 104mph
would have been a problem [1], nor would I have been at a greater risk
    of crashing. IMO.

[1] I didn't do that speed because I didn't know what measures they
would have in place to catch anyone speeding. But it was interesting to
note that the road was quiet, no-one kept to 70mph and even more amazing
was the fact that there was actually lane discipline.

I was always of the opinion that anyone caught doing over100-101Mph got an
    automatic ban from driving??
Guess being the Chief of Traffic helps....

Well they *should* but you can only get points *or* a ban... Maybe the
magistrate thought it'd be more fun to give him 6 points that last for a few
years and hope he does it again so he'll get to 12 a get a 6 month ban,
rather than the more usual 28 day one for just over a ton....

Of course if he'd been on a bike......

And if he wasn't in the same lodge as the Mag'......

    etc
    etc

    Carolyn says...
I'd heard recently that something like 96 mph is enough to secure a ban
    nowadays.

It's just been on North West Tonight - he's Chief of Traffic but also
    the Assistant Chief Constable.

The anti-speeding lobby Brake are very unhappy about the result as it
sends out a message that not all road users are treated equally (like we
didn't know that already?) and the AA are apparantly very unimpressed as
he should have received a minimum 7-week ban.

He did say that he was very very sorry thought, so that's ok.

If I get a rake of NIP's from the A14 in the next couple of weeks do you
think using his statement would help?

I was cought in the car @93mph just before easter - the policeman told
me that at 96mmph it would have been a summons & court appearance -
given that this was up in Yorkshire (and me being a suvverner) that
would have been a) inconvenient and b) costly.

He didn't say anything about at what point a ban would be on the cards.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. It was enough for me to make sure that
I don't go too fast, ok?
    He probably didn't know.

I was driving back along there this afternoon, probably 85-90, when I
noticed (all too late) a janitor on the bridge pointing a 20:20 at me.

Indicated 90 will be about 81mph true speed, IME.

Using the 10%+2 rule you might just have got away with it.

Not automatic, no, just recommended in guidelines to courts.
No, if he was specifically 'Chief of Traffic' he'd never have been
nicked in the first place, as the traffic plod concerned would have
realised immediately and sent him on his way with an apology. This
prosecution was obviously accidental - it must have got to the CPS
    before anyone noticed...

Just because a speedo has to be within 10%, it doesn't mean it's
guaranteed to be out by exactly 10%

Indicated 90 could well be 90 true speed.

I wonder if any of the other 15 drivers were also caught and what
    sentences they got?
