vehicle gets nicked, one month later still no news, person buys a new
car. Now 2 months later the insurance company still havent coughed up,
but the stolen car turns up. As a new car has been bought, the person
wants the money, not the car, but the insurance company refuses and says
they get the car back and nothing else.

Is there a timelimit where you can tell them to keep the recovered car
    and pay up instead?

Probably, but I'll wager it's not 8 weeks. The owner should've asked the
insco pay for a rental car first. That usually elicits some kind of
    response.

Dunno, I think this is where you get your magnifying glass out to read
the small print in your policy.

    did they say?

When he told his insurance company he was going to rent a car for a
couple of months to wait to see if his original car turned up what did
    they say?
