I'm pretty sure that they starting up a ferry from Sydney.

A mate told me this so he is probably bullshitting, any way, worth looking
    into.

    Safe riding.

That's pretty slow. Last time I went Sydney to San Francisco was in 1969. We
stopped at Nadi for a cuppa, then again at Hawai for Immigration, and still
got to 'Frisco an hour before we left Sydeney.

Close to my place too. That'll deter 'em.

I've done that trip in a day. Left Singleton at 7:30am, down the Putty Rd,
Bells Line, Lithgow, Bathurst, 15 min break for Lunch in Cowra at about 1:30,
Boorowa, Binalong, hit the Hume at Bookham, got into Albury about 5:30pm, and
Melbourne at about 9pm. That is 1200km and 14 hours, travelling alone and
with the minimum number of stops because I wanted to get to Melbourne that
night. Straight down the freeway to sydney and highway to melbourne would be
quicker, but damn boring. There's 800km of nothing on the Hume Hwy between
Sydney and Melbourne. It's worth noting that Travelmate time estimates are
realistic in a car but you should add 10-20% if you're on a bike, unless
you're an ironbutt who can ride consecutive 400km stints without taking a
    break to stretch or refuel.

ok this thread is a bit stale but it's worth mentioning....

When you're calculating distances and speeds, (esp if you're planning on using
the Hume Hwy) keep in mind that about 90% of all available highway patrol cars
in S.E. Australia are patrolling the Hume Hwy at any given point in time.
Last time I rode down the Hume there were 5 police cars on a 100km stretch
from approx 50km north of the border to 50km south of the border... there may
have been even more, but it was wet and dark and I only counted the ones which
were stopped on the side of the road with the party lights on chatting to
    customers.

Stale? Never, its packed full of preservatives!

Thanks Nev. I will be taking it easy and tackle the Syd - Melb in a day
    instead at this stage.

  11. The latter (tho' I'm talkin' CDMA), ask him again when he's sober!

FWIW, the last run up the Hume I did was after knocking on heavens
door in a motel room over the Wintersun weekend. Kilmore to northern
Central Coast, sick as a dog, around 160k fuel stops (long), cold and
miserable doing the speed limit (there'll be more cops on weekends),
    11 hours.

Well of course. Everyone knows that a bad day on a bike is better than a
    good day in a car.

Does anyone remember a cartoon - it might have featured Fred - of a road
scene? Darkness, howling wind, pounding sleet, half-dressed teeth-gritted
biker passes a car, the rider looks in, male driver is having his ear bashed
by his missus, kids tearing each other to shreds in the back, food scraps
flying in all directions, the driver and the biker catch each other's eye,
thought ballons pop up for each of them, both say "poor bastard..."

Rubbish! On the west coast it's iffy because of the peaks and valleys,
but otherwise not so bad. Telstra of course.
