Laura has just discovered that she can get different notes from flicking
the spines on the big cactus in the front window. So far, she's
produced recognisable versions of "The Blue Danube" and the "William
    Tell Overture".

Inevitably, given the nature of her instrument, there's a certain amount
of "suffering for her art" going on...

They're all little pricks, and she's flicking them with her fingernails.

    And laughing...

  4. When playing gently, is she prick teasing?

A cactus doesn't have much in the way of dynamic range. She doesn't
    play gently.

I'll have to try her with a banjo. I'm sure she'll pick it up really
    easily...

I have been trying finger picking. I can't make up me mind whether to
do it left or right handed but it sounds equally utter crap either way.

Endeavour to persevere. At 13, Laura's a quarter your age, and these
things come easy. The older you get, the more work it takes to learn
    things.

Does she manage to keep in key? Or is it a bit sharp?

You don't think it's just Bear being a bit crotchetty?
I suppose I could kill some time in a bar, but I think there's a
diminished chance of a succesful repeat performance.
