Admittedly the above statement also applies to you academics as well as
    everyone in commerce-land, doesn't it?

Get a grip of yerself man. It is only a conditioned reflex.

The most stressful thing you can do in your life apparently.

Followed by things like getting married, buying a new car and coming
back from the dam with a quarter stuffed down each sock.

[me taking the piss out of academia]
    you still sound chilled enough.

Here's a fun tale... I once trod on a cable and lost 90,000 pounds worth
of transactions in 2 minutes flat.. then the machine stayed dead for a
    further 3 hours.. [1]

But on the topic of house buying I remember the feeling of unease when I
bought this place.. it wasn't fun but also wasn't the worst experience
I'e had by a long stretch.

[1] I had in advance warned the owner of said machine that walking where
they told me was "safe" looked very "dodgy" and if I anything happened
then I wasn't going to be held responsible, I got them complete a
discalimer and sign a form with their instructions before I started....
then it went phut and within 30 seconds Then the MD and CEO showed up to
    rant, they got photocopies.

    Happy days.

Because you live down south and can't afford to buy anywhere decent.

Heh. You sound *exactly* like me- I worry excessively because I spend so much
time thinking through all the various bad news scenarios, while the typical
happy-go-lucky type doesn't bother pondering all and sundry, and muddles
through just fine, without a care in the world. As you and I could do too,
if we weren't so thoughtful and methodical.
A spontaneous leaving gift, how nice.

To which I always reply - that's why they pay us so much.

I'm runnng configuration and deployment on this project, so as soon as
*anything* doesn't work, I'm the first port of call. I'm starting to
get a bit, er, short with people.

It just ain't worth the grief, you know. Worrying, that is - getting
yourself all wound up by imagining a series of the _worst_ possible
outcomes, turning them into absolutely concrete fact in your head and
then spending hours shitting yourself about them. Remember it's all a
load of bollocks and nobody really gives a ****.

    Works for me.

The one that sticks in my mind is Manchester city centre to home in 12
mins, door to door on the SV. However, it's only about 14 miles and at
    11pm.

Last night's dash to Stoke and back (95-100 miles, roughly 1hr 40)
starting at 5.10pm and ending at 6.50pm wasn't too bad though,
considering the traffic, thelwall viaduct and roadworks on the M6.
