M6 specs?

  1. someone tell me this email I just received is a load of rubbish?

    _____
Our Highways and Transportation Division (we manage the motorway
maintenance for the Highways Agency) have just received the following
    notification:

The new electronic signs on the M6 were switched on this Tuesday. The
    bad
news is that they are rigged with the SPECS speed cameras. This probably
applies to all the new signs being installed on the M62, M60 and M56.
SPECS is a computer-camera based system.

As you go past the sign a digital camera reads your number plate. When
you go past the next sign your number plate is read again. The computer
'knows' how far apart the signs are so it can work out your average
    speed
    between
the two, or three or four.

The system is fully automatic and will issue a ticket without any form
    of
human intervention. It does this for every single vehicle that passes.
    You
will not know you have been caught until the ticket drops through your
letterbox as the cameras don't flash. They work 24/7, 365 days a year,
    and
theoretically, there's absolutely no limit on the number of tickets that
    the system can issue.

The whole section of the M6 between Knutsford and Preston is wired, both
ways. The system is set to trigger a ticket at 78MPH. (10% tolerance -
    but
don't take this as a guarantee) Radar detectors will be of no use as
    SPECS
is entirely passive, there is no laser beam to detect.

Be warned and spread the news!

    <snip>

I've no idea, but on a similar topic today I've witnessed exactly where
the money from the yellow cameras in derbyshire is going...

*More* yellow cameras, I've seen at least 3 new sites in a 2 mile
journey today, and 2 of them in places it's difficult to reach 30 on a
    normal day due to congestion.

It's a fucking joke, for example all the cameras were places after
traffic lights, junctions and other hazards, and also were mostly to be
found on the most open and straight bits of road. I can think of at
least 3 locations that would benefit from cameras all within a mile of
where they put them, but they'd only improve driver caution and make
    things safer there...

At least they're being a bit more honest about them and use the sign
"Police Enforcement Cameras" rather than making any reference to safety.

Come the revolution the yellow camera gang are the first against the
    wall.)

Makes interesting reading, particularly as recently the same authority
has said it hasn't covered it's costs so we can't expand the project, or
    words to that effect.

It's a hoax. There's been lot's of hoaxes on different stretches of the Motorway.
Even the Police themselves believe it on occasions. (or they try and
convince us that the cameras are used to trap speeders).

The bit on the M6 is just through the road-works.

    I rang the Speed-Cameras people and they also said it's a hoax. It's on 020 7870 9357
    if you wish to verify.

Now, what files did you recently delete from your pooter after an email
told you that they were viruses (vira ;-))?

Wouldn't surprise me. SPECS has been active on the roadworks stretch
through Birmingham for a while now.

And I reckon given the level of traffic you'd be hard pressed to
manage an average speed of more than 78 up there anyway.

Safety cameras work. I saw the proof today.

A40 at Andoversford, used to be a safety camera, then it got ripped out by
the roots, now there's nothing left but fading white marks on the road.
Passing by there today, there was a nold white Sierra upside-down on the
verge. If that safety camera hadn't been destroyed, that old Ford would
still be a heap of shit...

I'd average 60mph on my journey to Slough every morning when I was
working at Gericke. This was through rush hour M1, M25 and M4 traffic
jams on a 160,000 mile old CB250RS. I was usually 5 to 10 minutes slower
on the ZZR1100 doing the same trip.
