It was me. I ploughed into a coach load of Jpanese schoolgirls due to sexual
    tension and hamfisted throttle control.

    But I'm feeling better now.

Maybe he had massive organ malfunction. Or maybe had his head ripped
clean off. Or maybe just a wound, and he bled to death. Potentially,
a heart attack brought on my the trauma. Could have been any number
    of things.

If you find out, be sure to let us know, eh?

  13. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

The interest rate on this particular topic has certainly gone down.

And make sure to find out how experienced he was, although it's probably a
foregone conclusion that he only passed his DAS last week.

Tut, tut, young man. There's shock and there's shock.

It's all to do with sudden poor blood supply to the brain. That might be
due, as in the specific type your link refers to, to loss of blood through
    injury.

However, one of the wonderful things our bodies do in response to alarming
stimuli or any injury, even without significant blood loss - all tied up
with the adrenal response - is to constrict blood vessels to withdraw
blood from the extremeties, concentrating it around the vital organs. It
helps reduce subsequent blood loss from minor injuries, (not arterial
injuries, though) and makes the skin appear pale and cool to the touch.
Unfortunately, the body treats the head as just another extremity.

You can actually die of shock, although without blood loss it's unlikely.
(Excluding the possibility of passing out and falling under a bus.)
