I agree but it has always struck me that it all rather depends on whose
laws you are following/not following at the time.

  4. Oh dear. People like this are the reason why I hate "reality" TV
programmes. And they say humans are the cleverest part of creation?
I can feel my blood pressure rising just from your description. I think
I'd end up in hospital if I actually watched the programme.
    Too good for them.
That's not a nice way to talk about one of our posters ;-))

We have had this discussion already and I seem to recall that it was
concluded that the ECHR was what was wrong and that we were only talking
about foreigners anyway. Mind you, I also seem to recall not being
actually asked to vote on the matter either.

The thing I can't get my head around at the moment, is that we need,
apparently, to invest shitloads more cash in education, yet exam
results, and university admissions are at an all-time high.

Can they not make their mind up?

I thought "Lads Army" was particularly good. They took 20 odd
late-teens, early twenties lads and made them do National Service
    1930s style.

I'd trust them to make a profit. If that makes sense.

    I don't agree.

Stand them in a field, in a line - yes

Fly over them with a B52 - Yes.

Drop napalm - No. Drop clapped out old motor vehicles on them instead -
    that's entertainment.

A decent tumble down the station steps would do it - if I can pick the

    The thing I don't understand...

We can't fund higher education, end of grants, tuition fees etc... yet
we are trying to send an increasing proportion of our kids to higher
    education.

So what happens? More and more kids leaving university with a degree and
debts. Are there more jobs demanding a degree (with the outsourcing of
the service economy I don't think so). So what happens... we end up
with a load of discontented people with a degree for whom life isn't
delivering what they'd expected since the job they thought they'd
    qualified for isn't there.

I think it stinks. We've lost three (or possibly five) years of
someone's productive life to pointless education and left them pissed
    off.

If we *really* believe that we need to upskill the workforce do it
through a *proper* modern apprenticeship where they work (and are
    productive) whilst studying part time.

  15. Granted other skills are being taught - but then a previous generation
    had apprenticeships.

But they aren't, whatever one might think stupid. In reality
politicians have time to think and probably (due to surgeries etc.) more
of an overview of the problems of the country than anyone (well bar the
    police and health service professionals).

So, why don't they come to this conclusion?

I've only one thought and it's that they want the populace living in
debt because it makes them easier to control. I really don't want to
    believe this.

I totally agree, taking it a step further, it seems business nowadays is
all about taking on graduate trainees who end up getting fast-tracked
into management, whilst at the same time not taking on 'raw' unskilled
school leavers to train into hands-on roles, or to send through
apprenticeships.. Mainly because of the fear it's a lost investment
when they leave for a less than a pitance in salary.

I wonder if it's a British thing, made worse by the relative collapse of
our engineering and manufacturing industry or if it's something more
    worldwide.

    I don't know.

I think that I'm a better employee and Engineer *because* I worked as a
technician for several years whilst studying giving me a better
understanding of business processes etc. Also having worked in
Technician / Engineer / Sales / Marketing roles also helps.

I think I've just got Customer Care to do and can call "bingo" or
    something.

Well we can agree to disagree then.
Myself, I think voting at election and referendum times should be
