Coming down the M11 yesterday and got to the bit that says "keep two
chevrons apart", so what's that all about then?

Why not double the distance between chevrons and say "keep one chevron
apart". think of the money saved on chevrons!

Do you have a chevron prejudice? They've been on the M1 as long a I can
    remember.

Some people would take it literally consider:

Two chevrons apart leaves less opportunity for fuckwittedness.

Yeah, but conveniently they didn't put any in the right hand lane
    since that's reserved for high-speed tail-gating.

I thought they were filtering guides.

You know, it hadn't even occurred to me that someone could be that fucking
stupid, but on reflection I think you're probably spot-on...

That reminds me of many years ago when automatic level crossings were being
introduced in parts of rural Lincolnshire. They were accompanied by notices
that said "Stop while the red lights are flashing". Unfortunately, in the
local dialect the word "while" was frequently used instead of the word
"until". That led to some unfortunate incidents before the wording was
    hastily changed.

    TMack says...
They use "while" for "until" in Worksop too. It took me a little time to
understand wtf they were on about when I moved there.

Urban myth. And it was Yorkshire it never happened in.

Urban myth it may be, but the images of slack-jawed, six-fingered, chinless,
mouth breathing freaks with scary overbites waiting until the lights begin
to flash are so easy to conjure.

The interchangable nature of 'while' and 'until' is not restricted to
Lincolnshire and North Nottinghamshire, it is also evident in South and
    West Yorkshire.

'S what I meant. I'm from Leeds, and it's the lingo there. But the story
of the level crossing is as old as the hills. I have a "humorous" Yorkshire
dialect book from the 1960s and the story's in there. In that, the phrase
was "Do not cross while the red lights flash".

How many level crossings are there in Slough?

Nothing in Slough is on the level.
