LRP

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Jun 2, 2004.

  1. Remember the old 4 star, 3 star and 2 star?

What is LRP equivalent to, 2 star?

And will my bike run on it for any length of time (like more than a
    tankful) without damaging it?

    Cheers.

Lead Replacement, innit. Designed to replace 4-star, you numpty.
No probs unless you have a catalytic converter, in which case it will
be fucked and cost you dear for a replacement come MOT time.
It could have been worse, you could have done a Spete and filled up
    with diesel.

Don't know about a cat but I've not filled up with it yet. I was
watching Newsnight just now and it looks like there may be a return to
the year 2000 type fuel protests <flings head back and rolls eyes>

I used to put four star and unleaded in my smokers but since the star
graded stuff went west I never tried it. I thought the octane rating
would be higher and get a bit of a performance boost at the same time.

How many bikes have a cat?

Most new ones, and a large proportion of stuff produced over the last
    few years.

Really? I hadn't taken that much notice I must admit, but I didn't see
    any fuss about it anywhere.

  8. Even if you do kill the converter it doesnt matter for the MOT as they
(and emmisions) are not checked on bikes.

  9. It will run perfectly, and perhaps a bit sweeter with LRP.

I used it in the last shortages as everyone else was queuing to get
unlead, I just rode in and got the red stuff. There doesnt seem to be
much of it about anymore though.

  10. Um, wrong, actually. LRP doesn't poison a cat - well, it does, but
incredibly slowly, like over 50,000 miles.

We discovered this at Freight Transport Association, during the last
fuel dispute. Our tech bod got onto Shell and the cat makers
(Johnson-Matthey, I think) and that was the answer we got.

The idea was to keep our petrol vehicles running on LRP, as there was so
    much of the stuff about.

So we asked Vauxhall, as all our car fleet were Vauxhalls, and got the
answer; "Er, um, yes, we know about this, but you'll be nullifying the
    warranty if you do...."

So we didn't. And anyway, filler nozzles won't fit into fuel tank
fillers on cars designed for unleaded.

Fully leaded fuel is a different matter - the lead poisons cats in no
time at all - but LRP is a different matter.

  11. Four star, and you won't harm your bike at all.

IME that's not the case. The Guzzi ran like shit on it (from various
sources) when full fat 4* went.

Also, not as many vehicles need it now the bulk of older cars (70/80's
Rover, Ford and Vauxhall) have now been scrapped [1]. Hence the LRP sits
in the tanks on the forecourt going, for the want of a better expression,
    stale.

The Guzzi runs even shitter on it now. 95 RON works just as well and has
    done for the last ~50K.
See above. Hence its withdrawal this year(?).

[1] 'Proper' classics use an additive [2] or have had the heads modified.
[2] Morris make the only approved one (IIRC) as opposed to snake oil.

  13. Any sort of petrol poisons cats,
if you can get them to drink it.

    Q. How do you make a cat sound like a dog?
    A. Pour petrol over it, light a match and it goes "woof".

  14. This seems doubtful.
Why would the manufacturers put an expensive,
power-sapping lump of metal on a bike when it is
not legally required and has no benefits?

A BMW is the only bike on which I've seen a cat,
and that was when they were in league with that
Bangemann fellow to outlaw anything more fun than a BMW.

I must get me down to the bike shop and have a look
for injected machines with EGO sensors,
    or read the brochures.

Yea no problems. I've used it a few times when our local has run out of
unleaded. I've not noticed any increase in power mind.

The CBR1000F's a bit old for cats and such stuff. It'd probably run on
old chip fat if you wanted

<thinks> I'll let you try that first.

  20. Well, most BMWs have them now, including the singles, the Honda VFR has
one, I'm pretty sure the ZZR1200 does.....
