LRP and catalytic-converters

  2. Does a '97 GS have a cat? My '94 didnt. The 1150 range are all fitted with
    cats, I wasnt aware that the 11 had them fitted as standard.

  3. Well, you'd better make your mind up Clem baby, I've advertised it and I'll
    be selling to the first that comes along with the money. The White Power
    shocks went today, that only leaves the sidecar to go and i'm getting
    nibbles on it now.

    Interesting... I recently had a conversation with a guy on one of the
    650 beemers and noticed that it had 2 mufflers????
    He mumbled something (?) to my retort that I thought the bike was
    only a single... seems I might now have an explanation.

    I have no idea what you mean but there's a few 4-valve singles with two
    mufflers. (One for each exhaust outlet)

    It does
    It is directly underneat the bike where the header pipes go into it.It's
    that huge thing that looks like a large can whick then trails off to the
    muffler.

  11. Dont know that's necessarily a cat, I never seen any info that said cats
    were standard on R1100GS/R/RS/RT, I can remember info that they were
    optional. It could just be a collector to add more volume to the exhuast
    system, the larger the volume of the exhaust, the quieter they can make the
    bike without reducing power.

    A catalytic converter is exactly that - it creates a chemical reaction
    (Hammo translate that into the correct terms if you're unhappy with the
    explanation, just don't start trying to have an argument about it OK ?)
    In this case it helps turn the emmissions of a petrol engine into
    slightly less noxious gases.
    Well if you kill it you're going to create marginally more pollution, it
    may also reduce the efficiency of your engine (ie less HP) if it gets
    all blocked up and it can't breathe properly

    Clem's is efi but I didn't look for an oxygen sensor.
    On my S the collector is the cat converter.
    I want to get rid of it and get a flow through pipe but the cheapest
    quote was $500 which I think is a rip off for a 70 cm Y shaped piece of
    pipe.
    How much noisier does it get if you replace the collector/cat?

    Possibly, it may reduce the amount of gas you can flow and hence the HP.
    You can fix that with a Dremel :)
    Possibly. Unlikely I would intuit but I have no empirical data on it
    One tank is unlikely to bugger it, although a tankful of leaded probably
    would (I don't think there's been any proper studies done but I recall
    reading that it didn't take a lot of leaded to screw a cat conv. fwiw.

    Naah they'll cope with a fair bit of lead (surprisingly tolerant of it
    in my experience), the cat will get clogged long before the lamda sensor
    Naah, making the cat less efficient just means more unburnt volatiles
    into the atmosphere, the o2 sensor picks up the %age O2 it doesn't care
    what the rest is afaik

    The Yamaha SZR660 has two exhaust pipes even though it's a single - one
    off each exhaust valve. Wouldn't be surprised if the BMW and the Peg
    (shares the same Rotax engine doesn't it ?) had the same.

    Clogged :)

    It doesn't physically clog it up. It just poisons the precious metals that
    coat the catalytic honeycomb.

    It will also poison the lambda sensor which will lead to bad part throttle
    running (closed loop) and poor fuel economy

    You will find that tin is NOT the lead substitute in LRP. MOre likely
    potasium or phosphous compounds.
