As I understood it, most, if not all, Jap bikes have stainless rotors so
they don't look shite after a night out in the rain. The factories
compromise braking efficiency by not fitting std iron discs for fashion's
    sake....

As far as I know they stopped using stainless steel quite a while ago.
They're not cast iron either these days because the rapid rate at
which they rust causes the pads to stick to them and warping follows
    soon after.

**** knows what the steel is but it certainly isn't stainless.

Maybe that's why he kept it quiet.

He could have had a lift home from either Adie or myself if he'd
phoned because we were both stopping in the same village as he was on
Saturday night. There'd even been earlier discussion of doing beers on
    the Saturday evening.

Nah, I've never had a problem with warping, the worst I've ever had is
discs being juddery for a few brakings until the rust cleans off. They
do stick overnight and release with a bang first thing in the morning,
    though.

I think they've calmed down a tad. No-one's sent me death threats when
they found out what that Triumph in my sig actually looks like...

<sighs> That would have saved me and eldest sprog a 280 mile round
    trip.

Ho hum, I suppose it probably did the car good to have a decent run
    out for a change.

They warp if left for a couple of weeks. Not much but they do it.

Would you expect them to be? I suspect they were a brand with an A at
the start of the name. They're cheap and the foak says they're the
bestist thing to happen since 010's so I must stop this campaign of
hate. Please stop throwing bait at me.

What a muppet. He knew we were going to be less than a mile from him
and even if Adie had gone on the bike I was there in the van and would
have made room in the back for him. A phone call would have sorted him
    out.
Give it to me for some of that good old thousand miles a week
treatment. The toolboxes and manky overalls on the back seat might
devalue it a bit but at least it'll have had a nice little run.

Modern discs are noticeably thinner than SOB discs, and the calipers,
of course, are way more powerful, so I'd expect modern discs to wear
faster. There agin, as long as they're within the recommended wear
limits, it makes no difference whether they're worn down by the pads or
    somebody skimming them.

My old 400 Four has a front disc of amusing smallness (diameter) and
ridiculous thickness [1] and coupled with the feeble single-piston
caliper, 400 Four discs just don't wear out, period. Second-hand ones
are worth eff-all because nobody ever needs them.

I've got the *tiniest* warp on one of the Duke discs. The front wheel
was distorted (they're very soft, and go out easily) and I had it
pressed back true by a specialist. Obviously, to do this, the tyre and
discs have to be removed. On reassembly, one disc is now
ever-so-slightly out of true, but you only notice it if you apply the
brakes really, really gently at very slow speeds. There's absolutely no
pulsing in any other type of use.

Local Ducati dealer said he didn't even notice it - I guess I only
notice it because I've lived with the bike from new.

I've had a disc skimmed by a specialist, and I know there are others
(including the bod who did my wheel) who use presses to true discs up.
I've ridden a couple of bikes with warped discs, and it's bloody
annoying - like riding a bike with an oval brake drum.

I know that some pads wear discs faster than others, but I've never had
a disc wear out on me. Seen a few, mind, including some that have worn
away because the numpty riding the bike let the pads wear down to the
    metal.

As long as a disc is true, and isn't severely grooved, or worn below
its recommended limits, it's OK, IMHO.

[1] Measurable in Standard Ken Units.

Sorry to hear that. GWS, etc. However, looking at the positives; if the
(front & rear) left indicator assemblies are undamaged then I'll buy
them off you, so it's not all bad news.
