Hi, gary here again, i posted about the solenoid gearchange thingo a while
    back. still looking into it.

I have found an XR 600 that I WANT!!!!!!! However, it is too tall for me.
Does anyone know a business in aus that can modify the rear shock to shorten
it so i can get on this monster? Or maybe modifying the seat too?
For those that don't know, i have an above knee left leg amputation. I sat
on this beast today with stand down and could get on it but no way could i
get up straight let alone kick it over. GOD i want this bike!! Would love
to hear from someone that has had this mod done or any other input.

in that case why not look at say the DRZ400E with the electric leg and is a
    lower seat height
    IIRC

will also be a lighter bike

the DR250 is of course lower in power , but also has electric leg, is a
    lower bike and also has
the option to lower it by swapping the linkages around and is lighter again

    Finally, a question I /can/ answer!

I just put in a call to my little brother - steering and suspension
dude. He's given me these pearls of wisdom...

Call these folks (in this order)

    1) wholesale suspension
    119 Coreen Ave, Penrith NSW
    0247212112

Apparently these people have an engineering workshop, and will
build shocks to order. Doesn't know if they do bikes, but
how different to cars could they be?!

    2) Proven Products
    54-56 redfern st
    wetherill park
    sales: 1300 304 424

This is where he sources his Koni shocks. Not 100% sure if
they build to order, or just repair shocks. (I kinda like the
idea that the shocks are good enough to warrant repairing!)
    http://www.proven.com.au/

    3) Bowers Suspension
    270 hannell st
    Wickham 2293
    49693911 (02??)

This mob will do made-to-order and one-off suspension stuff,
    including, apparently, building custom shocks.

Thinking out loud, it *might* be that you really want a lowered
spring, not a shock. If that turns out to be the case, he does
have a contact for a guy that will do made-to-order, one-off
springs. ("I've got his card around here somewhere"!) Give me
a yell if it turns out that's what you need.

While Lovells do actually build a lot of the 'standard' springs
in their cattledog to order (ie: customer says I want part no
"12345", they rush out and build a set), he wasn't sure if they'll
do an actual custom spring. They will likely put you in touch with
    someone who will though.

If you do need a lowered spring, *PLEASE* don't let anyone
take to the existing spring with a gas-axe (oxy torch) with
a view to lowering by shortening the existing spring. It's
a mindlessly stupid (and dangerous) thing to do, but enough
people do it that it's worth warning about!

None of the abovementioned places are anywhere near us, so I'm
guessing that they all work OK with couriers and credit cards
    and stuff.

Well,. price is the key. the 600 is $1000, thats all i know. ringing the
owner tonight to find out all about it. sounds cheap. Looks/sounds good.
orange&white colour. i might have to go for a smaller bike or electric start
yet. Anyone know mods for electric start? i think that'd take some doing.

Thanks for the replies so far.

ok GB, thanks for all that. Basically i don't know if i want a smaller
spring or shock. all i know is its too big to stand up with. would be doing
a bit of off road stuff and maybe get it on the road later, depends if i
*qualify* for a license (lots of red tape to be dealt with being an amp).

    Thanks for the replies....

  10. In Sydney, Shock Treatment at Wallacia can certainly shorten a shock. I can
modify a seat easily, but then so can any motor trimmer you'll find in the
    Yellow Pages, easy job.

you don't need a whole new shock... most suspension places should be
able to modify it for you to suit. I've just gone through the process
of making everything about my ktm380 bigger, which seems much easier :)
