It lost a little in the timing thanks to the mong brigade, I'm afraid.

Bit of both, really. We've got lots of green here (loads of palm
trees lining Al Corniche - the road around the bay which forms the
focal point of the city) but it's imported green and it doesn't really
    ring true.

Also, allotments and ricketty sheds are deeply ingrained with my sense
of family, and so identity and home.

You can't resist it, though, can you!

Well partially perhaps. At least now I know he's referring to a film,
but I still don't understand the reference. Perhaps there's some
cannibalism in it? The link doesn't give me a hint of any though.

I thought Soylent Green had gone down as a general cultural reference
these days. Particularly in the context of people on UKRM.

    How wrong I was.

if you'd suggested that "everyone knows what Soylent Green is"
yesterday, I would have agreed with you.

I mean, even Champ appears to have got it...

And it was made in the '70s. What more can I do?

From the site : "a revolutionary and needed new foodstuff has an
    horrific origin".

And, on clicking more : "... He soon stumbles across the real source
of Soylent Green, which is not soy beans or plankton any more."

    I'm sure that's enough of a hint.

Prior to this, the _only_ reference I'd ever seen to Soylent Green was
that someone's recently started posting here under that name.

I _still_ don't "get it" but as you point out, it's probably not worth
    explaining.
As he points out, he's a movie buff. It may surprise you to learn that
    I'm not

    :)

Soylent Green was originally mentioned in the book upon which the film
was based - "Make Room! Make Room!" by Harry Harrison.

    Don't you read books either?

I'm not so sure, admittedly it's unpleasant to eat people but surely better
    than everyone starving to death?
