Isn't it a lovely sound when after a full strip down and major
component replacement the bike fires up first kick and runs as
    sweet as a nut.

taz is back on the road.

Ps what kind of running in time should I give the engine
now that it has a new piston and rings.

Yup.There's that moment(you know the one<grin>) just before you press
the starter or put the foot down on the kick-start where you pray to
your Gods(even if you don't believe they exist) and you take a deep
breath and try and think of what you have forgotten<grin>.And then....
    She lives :D
Pity the fool who doesn't use the spanners, they never know the joys or
frustration, byt the joy always outweighs the frustration :D

If it's not had a re-bore then just do an urban cycle changing gears
often but with no sustained or high revs for too long.New rings like
to be under load but not held at the same revs for too long. It's
load/Correct revving and heat that helps wear and polish the bores
with the rings to get full compression, not the tensile spring strength
of the rings(how could it be when you think about it considering their
    size and thickness?).

However. If you have not had a re-bore and you did not,"Chamfer" the
worn lip off the top of the cylinders before you put the new rings in
then things are different and you will have to treat the bike/engine
    like egg-shells.

I don't know your particular bike but in the,"Old-days" you could get
replacement rings for standard and over bore that the top piston
compression ring itself was chamfered to allow for the worn lip at the
top of the cylinder if there had not been a rebore. This was so that
unlike a new,"Square" profile ring could not clatter against said lip
    and explode(and they did!!).

What's your situation bearing this in mind as then I can amend and
    advise :)

    PS
Just done what you have done and finished,"My" running-in cycle for my
    engine re-build/situation.
