I have got an XT350 and the guy I bought it from said it had 6 months tax
(bought same time as MOT and it does have 6 months MOT left), but it was not
on the bike, probably stolen. Will I have to wait for the V5 to come before
going to local dvla or is there a quicker way, without being pulled over and
    asking plod to check PNC???

    Cheers,

John emerged from their own little world to say
If the ex-owner has not snaffled it off the bike to claim a refund then you
can apply for a replacement. I've certainly done this on cars when trading
them in to a dealer but it seems a bit tight for just £15 worth of RFL.

The bike will need to be registered in your name before they will send you
the replacement. There is a £7 fee too.

Personally, so I could use the bike immediately[1], I'd just get another
annual disc for £30 from a Post Office using the green section of the V5
    from the last keeper.

wessie () gurgled happily, sounding much like
    they were saying :

    that's a clever site

if the vehicle shows as taxed then recheck its status next month - if the
last keeper has surrendered the tax disc it may not show up for a while
