Lost keys

I thought that the helmet lock on most things only used a subset of the
main locks pins for cheapness. 8 pins in main for example, and 4 in the
helmet lock. Same key but cheaper to manufacture.

Perhaps these days. Panic Keys told me it was worth a try, on a 93 SO
Italian bike it worked. They wanted to see the V52 before they would do
it though. Needless to say the helmet lock was not put back on the bike.
Now I think of it I should really remove the one on GFR#2 as I never use
it (if it still has one) and put it in a safe place.

    Twice as many to lose.

IME you need to keep them in a different place *as well*. YMMV, but
you're not really in a position to argue :)

If, and it's a big if, as has been suggested in the thread, (old) Ducati and
BMW are like Saab and Porker cars then the V5 to a dealer should sort it
    out. Assuming original keys.

I believe new Ducati, if you lose all the keys including the red one, is a
complete electronic/key package. Perhaps Ant can confirm. Into 4 figure
    territory.

In theory, no red key and its a case of replace ECU, ignition lock and
instrument panel - megabucks. However, there are a few specialist
with the right kit who can re-flash the ECU and then create a new red key.
This would still be expensive but nothing like the cost of buying all the
    new parts.

Looked everywhere I could think of this evening - all my bike jackets
    and jeans / trousers.

Emptied out drawers / sideboard etc.

Also checked the lockups today - both of them.

Found the keys in a pair of shoes in the hall.

Good news is that all vehicles were present and roller shutters
    undamaged when I checked.

    (The Older Gentleman) gurgled happily,
sounding much like they were saying:
I found my glasses in the plastic film wrapping around half a multi-pack
    of bottles of mineral water.

    _After_ buying a new pair.

    Heh. You ****.

You have, however, motivated me to go searching: I've misplaced my
primary key for the Bandit. The house key and garage door key are on
the ring and it makes using the spare inconvenient as I have to
remember to pick up other keyrings with house and garage keys on. The
one I want will be in a pocket somewhere, I suspect - or in my toolbox
.... or on the floor of the garage ... fuckit, I'll get some new ones
    cut.

Seems reasonable to me. I occasionally used to throw keys into shoes
on the grounds you're bound to find them when the shoes go on. My
daftest so far is eventually finding my keys in the fridge one
    morning.

Who hasn't put something that doesn't belong, into the fridge? Especially
when making a cuppa and being distracted.

I often look in the fridge for lost items for precisely that reason.

you're all quite mad. I mean, mad in a different way from having mild
OCD, because my keys are always in the same place.

Having said that, the weirdest thing I ever found in a fridge was a
cervical cap. Which was especially odd as my GF at the time was on the
    pill.

    Strange days, the 1980s.

I reckon I have mild[1] OCD as well, but when I get distracted, that's
it. Things can go to pot
    Sounds about normal.

[1]More than mild if you ask SWMBO
